History's most brutal killers, the Majingilane Male Lions

The second part of the video, with the three lads is from Londolozi.

Guess who's back?!

The Majingilane were back on their old stomping grounds this morning and yesterday. Are they here to ward off the threat of the Avoca young males? Who knows.

Whatever the reason, it's great to have them back; it's been over seven years since they first came roaring onto Londolozi!!

This week also saw the return of the Majingalane male lions into the centre of Londolozi, responding to the calls of the Avoca males, who have been sighted on Londolozi in recent times. The two coalitions did not meet up in the end though and the Majingilane headed back west without any interaction.

A Majingalane male lion on the move in the cool, early morning. An intimidating sight for any creature.

They never went that far south. Took over from Mr T and KT in 2010, selati's dethroned the mapogos in the west in 2012 and the Majingalanes have that territory since 2014 I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

ENEMY INVASION
There is nothing quite like seeing lions but when you have been watching the interaction of a pride for 3 years and go out on safari only to see three new males in their prime lying in the heart of Southern Pride territory – this sends shivers of excitement down my spine! What a feeling!

Initially all the rangers jumped to the conclusion that these three males were the new males that had shown up on the reserve a little while ago, but after some debating on one of my facebook  posts with the lions fans around the world it turns out that these could possibly have been the Majengilanes, a formidable coalition of 4 from the North of our reserve. This still needs to be confirmed and I am hoping that some of you may be able to help us out in identifying them

The guys found them early in the morning and they were doing what lions do best…sleeping, and by the time I relocated them nothing had changed. I planned for the afternoon safari we would again go see them but only later when it got dark so we could see them moving around. As I got into the sighting we could see the silhouette of these three magnificent males strolling down the road towards us, backlit from the vehicles following them. As cool as ice they strolled right past my tracker without even passing him a glance.

They moved through the bush silently, stopping from time to time smelling to identify the smells of new females. Every time they picked up a new scent they would raise their heads and listen carefully hoping that they would pick up the sound of a distant roar to pin point their new targets. The look in their eyes was one of complete confidence and even more so of a lust for a new pride

One of the blonde mane males walked passed my vehicle only to stop right next to my door, no more than a metre from me, lifted his head and pull the aromas of the evening into his nostrils. He was HUGE and the thought that I didn’t know these males left me a little nervous at his proximity. Another lay just behind the vehicle as the blonde male moved to the front and lay down in the headlights and third one just off in the bush.

After a few minutes of sleep they got back up and proceeded to bond with each other by rubbing heads, rolling on one another and grooming before moving off into the darkness of the night and not be seen again. By the time we had set on the next morning’s safari they had left the reserve and although they were gone they had left an undeniable mark on me

A DAY TO REMEMBER
BY: STEVE VOLKWYN (BUSH LODGE RANGER)
December 19, 2013

"With the sun setting and the mood on the vehicle incredibly joyous we decided to make our way to where 3 male lions had been seen that morning. Heaviness and I were chatting to try and think and guess if it would be the Sand River males or the Majingilane male coalition, possibly the strongest male lion coalition in the Sabi Sands. As we arrived into the last known position of the males, we were all buzzing with excitement of the unknown, we turned left and all of a sudden the unmistakable size, mane colour and shear aura of the Majingilane males hit us. We watched as the males slowly started to yawn, stretch and start to groom each other and then decide to do what male lions often do best, go back to sleep. We decided now that the lure of Bush Lodge’s cuisine was growing and we decided to leave the males out in the open clearing and head back for a wonderful dinner.

Heaviness picked up his spotlight to start guiding me out and back to the road; it was no longer than one rotation of spotlight before I heard, “Leopard.” I was shocked – how could there be a leopard within 60 meters of these three huge male lions. On a closer look it was a female known as Little Bush female. She stood there in awe, much like us when we first saw these three majestic males.
Shortly after she started to slink away, carefully looking back and up all the large trees for potential escape routes. Little Bush female slowly moved off along the treeline with us following closely behind watching her scent mark and patrolling her territory. All of a sudden Heaviness dropped the spotlight off her and told me to turn all my lights off immediately, what was happening? I was completely unclear as to what was happening and was asking a flurry of questions. Heaviness picked up the spotlight and told me there was a lion 20 meters away from my vehicle. I could not believe this – it was the three Majingilane males stalking her, getting closer and closer as we sat in the dark. Our minds were going crazy with imagination of what was happening as we could hear the males creep through the nearby grass. There was a sudden burst and explosion from the bushes, we went lights on immediately, Little Bush female was nowhere to be seen and the three males were slightly out of breath, they regrouped and started grooming one another.

Words cannot describe the pure enthusiasm, shock and excitement on our vehicle, we all high fived and decided that the Bush Lodge bar was highly needed for some serious celebration drinks. What a day!."

A WEEK IN THE BUSH: VOL 5
April 16, 2014
BY: MIKE PALMER (BUSH LODGE RANGER)

We picked up on some lion tracks the following morning that seemed to be trailing the large buffalo herd. At least three males were detected. We all had our suspicions as to who these unidentified males were and had our theories confirmed when they were found feeding on a buffalo calf about forty minutes after the first tracks were called in. It was the Majingilane males! A coalition of four huge male lions who possess territory north of our boundaries. They were very far from home, but hungry and with the distinct smell of buffalo in the air, it must have been too much to resist. Still, it was indeed a special sighting for all

As suddenly as they had appeared, they were gone, continuing to trail the masses of buffalo. This left us to continue on with business as usual, although ‘usual’ is a relative term around these parts. The reserve has been teeming with elephant herds as well as general game. The bush is showing signs of the dry season quickly approaching as well as all of us noting a distinctive drop in evening temperatures, not that it’s unwelcome.

Dark maned The boss of Sabi Sands

A legend weathered by victory. I've enjoyed countless hours in the past with this male lion, and to see him again more than 3 years later is both exciting & emotional. Him & his brother - both present & fallen - have weathered many challenges & protected their territory with vigor. Time will allow for other challengers to take their place but not right now. For the time being the they still reign supreme over much of the Sabi Sands.
