The Norwegian Brown Bear

*This image is copyright of its original author

Weight
Males: 100-300 kgs, Females: 60-200 kgs

The size of the Norwegian(scandinavian) Brown bear is scares compared to the size of bears from Russia or North-America, but they still maintain their powerful and bulky body, and is by far the most powerful predator in Scandinavia.

Diet
Bears in scandinavia get their energi from everithing from berries and plants, to kalves of Moose and Reindeer. They also eat herbs and grass. The Diet of the Norwegian Brown Bears is mostly dominated by plants, roots and most of all Berries. Berries is by far the most important source of food for brown bears during the fall in scandinavia, the proteins and minerals the berries carry is very important for bears before they hybrinate in the winter. When the bear needs to stock up on protein in spring and summertime ants and prey items like Moose and raindeer are very important,

Territory
The size of the territories of scandinavian brown bears vary a lot based on both individual and gender. Males have a lot bigger territories than females.

Females with cubs usally have a territory size between 100-150 square km, whilst females without cubs have territoires between 200-300 Square Km. Males have a staggering range between 800-1000 Square km, compared to their females. (I`ve even heard of Brown Bear males elsewhere in Europe with ranges up to 10.000 Square Km!!)

Young males without territories wander great distances in search of a territory, they have been observed wandering thousands of kilometers.

Population (Only Norwegian population)
The last census was done in 2013, and then there were proven a population of 148 brown bears in Norway. 55 of these were females, and 93 was males. The brown bears status in Norway is a sad situation, our brown bear population is way to low compared to the all empty, uninhabited areas of wilderness we have. Brown bears can be shot and killed for eating nothing less than one sheep, and if it even comes close to a place where humans live. Whilst in North-America they can insted be relocated for similar cases.

In 2013 we had nothing more than 13 litters of cubs in all of Norway.

We have few litters, and very few survivours.

Here is a map that shows where brown bears are situated in Norway (Blue: Males / Red: Females)

I think it pretty impressive that Bear 205 at the age of 4.5 years ( a brown bear is fully mature at age 9 ) within a period of 29 days hunted and killed 6 adult moose and 3 calves. First of all, this would suggest that Bear 205 chooses adult moose rather than calves which are the usual choice of a grizzly. It is also impressive for a predator lacking the "hunting tools" of a big cat or the pack-strength of a wolf to pull down and kill an adult moose.

I´m a bit surprised but also not. Thinking about an adult male brown bear, I always thought they can take down pretty much any land mammal prey, except the obvous like rhinos, giraffes, hippos and elephants. They´re just abnormaly powerful creatures. Though looking at the weight of the male, which isn´t extremely heavy for a male brown bear, and considering the weight of an adult moose, if it was a male, than I´m kind of surprised. Just checked wikipedia and the moose in Scandinavia are not the biggest among the subspecies. So everything is relativised. But still, if it were males, average 320 to 475 kg, and with that mentioned frequency, 6 times, it´s still an impressive data by any means.
I dont think you have to be as efficiently equipped as a big cat to hunt down big prey animals, if your the most powerful omnivour on the planet ;-)

While it does claim that the bear took down adult moose I would most likely think it would be female. I have seen huge moose bull before and I don't think that a Bear would want to tangle with them. It would be extremely risky for the bear, from what I have seen I have seen no accounts of Bull Moose or Bull Bison being preyed upon by any animal in the North. If anybody can confirm or deny I would be interested.

You are talking about an animal double the size of a big cat. Size matters, and these guys got way to much of it.

There is some information here on grizzly predation of both moose and bison. Also interesting are the smaller barren ground grizzly bears preying on musk ox...  http://shaggygod.proboards.com/board/18/bovine-ungulates
