How much funds for the protection of the lion-tiger? MP Parimal Nathwani questions Rajya Sabha
March 16, 2020 TV Gujarati

Yesterday Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani asked a question in the Rajya Sabha about the conservation of tigers and lions which was answered by Babul Supriyo, the Union Minister of State for Environment, Forestry, & Climate Change. The question was asked about the amount of central government allocated for the maintenance of tigers and lions in the country, and in response, Babul Supriyo informed that the central government had allocated on its tigers a value of  ₹1010.42 Crores and on lions ₹32 crores, under the Wildlife Conservation Scheme.

“The data of fund released for lion conservation does not include the fund released by the Government of Gujarat. The state govt had sanctioned Rs 350 crore for long-term conservation of lions in Gujarat. But, the Centre needs to increase funding for Asiatic lions as they are found only in Gir and nearby areas in Gujarat, while tigers are spread across India and Asia,” Nathwani said.
The Minister's statement also said that the state ministry's Asiatic Lion Conservation Project was started by allocating ₹97.85 crore.

Babul Suprio's response revealed, “The Centre released Rs 4.98 cr, Rs 5.59 cr and Rs 21.42 cr in the year 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively under DWH Scheme for Gujarat, which inter alia includes conservation of Asiatic lions. In the same three years, for Project Tiger, the Centre released Rs 342.25 cr, Rs 345 cr and Rs 323.17 cr respectively.”

Responding to another question asked by MP Parimal Nathwani, the minister said that the number of Asian lions increased from 459 in the last three census to 523 in 2015, up 45.68 percent from 359 in 2005. The number of tigers increased from 73.91 percent in 2220 in the last three census to 3000 in 2018.
The government also said that in the case of death or permanent disability, the amount paid by the ministry to the victim & their family a compensation was recently increased to ₹5 lakh from ₹2 lakh. While the cost of damage to property/crop has to be paid by the State or Union Territory Governments was required by upto ₹25000.

Wild animals, including a jaguar, took over deserted tourist hotspots in southeast Mexico. One of the videos shows a jaguar walking a city street at night. According to local media, the jaguar was also spotted inside the complex of the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa in Tulum: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article...sorts.htmlhttps://expressdigest.com/wild-animals-t...n-resorts/https://www.newsoneplace.com/12740321911...an-animalshttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/...s-resorts/https://www.thesun.co.uk/travel/11296029...us-closed/

USDA Statement on the Confirmation of COVID-19 in a Tiger in New York

(Washington, D.C. April 5, 2020) – The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories has confirmed SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans) in one tiger at a zoo in New York. This is the first instance of a tiger being infected with COVID-19. Samples from this tiger were taken and tested after several lions and tigers at the zoo showed symptoms of respiratory illness.

Public health officials believe these large cats became sick after being exposed to a zoo employee who was actively shedding virus. The zoo has been closed to the public since mid-March, and the first tiger began showing signs of sickness on March 27. All of these large cats are expected to recover. There is no evidence that other animals in other areas of the zoo are showing symptoms.

USDA and CDC are monitoring the situation and working to support the state and local health departments and state animal health officials. State animal and public health officials will take the lead in making determinations about whether animals, either at this zoo or in other areas, should be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. USDA will notify the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) of this finding.

Anyone sick with COVID-19 should restrict contact with animals, out of an abundance of caution including pets, during their illness, just as they would with other people. Although there have not been reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19 in the United States, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. If a sick person must care for a pet or be around animals, they should wash their hands before and after the interaction.

@sanjay was right. This rumour was debunked few days back which went viral. Local news reporters confused leopard with cheetah which they published in print media.

Cause of Death : Territorial Fight

The officials of Ramnagar forest division found the body of a 4-to 5-year-old male tiger in Fatehpur range. The forest officials claimed that the tiger had died 24 hours ago. However, the veterinarians who conducted postmortem examination of the tiger alleged that it had died around 4-5 days ago.

According to the autospy report, the big cat died in infighting and the death was not the outcome of any poaching attempt or disease. The postmortem team will be sending the tiger's sample for further tests. “The hind portion of the tiger had injury marks and was decomposed,” said BP Singh, DFO, Ramnagar.
