There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Avoca male lions

Lions dont plan ahead that far. Nor do they spend time with such political strategies.

They are not going to add another mouth to feed or rival over mating for a hypothetical future conflict.

It seems they will have to compete with PC males for that pride so the supperior numbers would be very helpfull.

I agree that an extra hand/paw is always very helpful.

True. It is only my wish that they add a new partner for their sake in a future clash.

Not at all. Having one more member would make them the second biggest threat in ss. None of these two member coalitions would pose a threat, If they run into each other before NYM/Nhena have challenged for a territory, DM would be a great addition to that squad. Numbers are irreplaceable for a coalition, everything else is secondary. I don't see any circumstances where killing DM would be efficient, why take on that fight when you don't need to, DM is a free agent with nothing and no one would gain anything from killing him. If lions were so unwilling to share with each other, there would only be lone males, so I don't think that's an issue at all.

If that was all male lions wanted, they wouldn't have territories or stay with the pride long enough to protect the cubs to sub-adulthood. They have evolved to coexist with prides and if that wasn't the case, the species wouldn't survive this long.

If strength in numbers were all that matters. We wouldn't have separate coalitions. Everyone would just merge in one huge coalition. What we normally see is much smaller groups.
Often the only big groups you see are those that have been together from when they were cubs. But even those often split apart.

Ultimately every lion is in there for themselves. Competition within a coalition can become just as fierce as those between outsiders.

They protect their territory which houses easy access to food and perceived mating opportunities. Having a pride is always far more cosy living than nomadic life.

If they feel they can no longer find those in their current territory they will expand or in some cases abandon their territory, pride and cubs and all. Overtime the bonds between them and the pride may become strong enough to keep them around. But no male coalition takes over a pride with any thoughts about how or if they can keep it in the future. Even if they know they will be chased out tomorrow. They will still go for it, as tonight they will have sex.

He looks decent considering circumstances he was in. Also being in EP he has good odd of linking up with Talamati pride again.

DM is definitely the most interesting Avoca due to his movements alone. I know that Lions lose mane volume in the summer but he’s lost a LOT of mane. He must be under a lot of stress due to his unstable situation. Hope he’s not suffering from any illness on top of everything else. Despite all of this he looks like he’s doing okay. Hope he sticks around in EP and meets back up with the Talamatis.
