Numbers didn't plummet that much for genetic quality to degrade.

When conservation started India had about 1500 tigers, thinly spread over a much larger area of wilderness than today. http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/280/1762/20130496

But, most forests we spotted with villages & the tiger density was much lower even in today's tiger reserves!
20 tigers in a single forest was a pretty high number back then... It still is in the reserves where indigenous tribal people live today!

With creation of Tiger Reserves the tigers (or their progeny) quickly moved to those inviolate pockets & that brought together a wide variety of genes.
(It may be one of the reasons for rise in average size of Indian tigers in the last half century. My personal view. I doubt it can be proved...)

Central India & Terai, which saw most of those huntings, still has fairly well connectivity.

Pandangan pribadi saya. Saya ragu itu bisa dibuktikan ... )

Central India & Terai, yang melihat sebagian besar dari mereka perburuan, masih memiliki konektivitas cukup baik.
Thats mistery in my head.....20 individual is very inbreed for breed before think they will make small weak generation but tiger in india still big over 320 kg

Again... they DID NOT grow from a small population!

Earlier all the forests around Kaziranga had tigers.
Most of the next generations migrated towards Kaziranga leaving back only a handful outside the proteced areas (many of whom got poached).

Now that their numbers there have grown too much, they're pushing the younger/weaker ones out & today peripheral forests have tigers again.

PS: Who estimated them to be 380 kilos?
Even if some were weighed those numbers were never released!

Although many here would disagree, from the looks of them, i don't think the average weight would be much higher than the Terai...

Namun dalam beberapa tempat tumbuh dari populasi kecil setelah berburu kolonial dan mereka masih besar dan berotot seperti wagdoh .. tidak memiliki genetik masalah u tahu mengapa?@Rishi

Erm.. English?

Small population is not a problem.
Isolated population is a problem.

Presently in India, only Ranthambore & Sariska are threatened due to that.
As tigers number of Ranthambore fell below a dozen.. twice & today's Sariska tigers are originally from Ranthambore!

They tend to be a bit lanky, but doesn't show signs of inbreeding yet!

I'm sorry, but 10 individuals cannot... most probably.

But in this case we're taking about several hundreds of such 10 individuals, living in interconnected forests!

Forests in Java are just too fragmented!

But the rhinos & leopards & buffalos still have hope. Good luck with them!

Forests of those days in India were inter connected. Corridors helped in genetic exchange between isolated groups. Genes regularly flew from one population to another. So, the bengal tigers were not inbred except in rare cases like ranthambore tigers and Corbett rajaji complex.

Ranthambore-Sariska tigers got (somewhat) inbred only after the poaching spree of the 90s when their numbers fell drastically.

And Corbett-Nandhaur-Surai complex is out 2nd best connected one (1st is Nilgiri)! It never saw a numerical drop. Why would they be inbred?
Rajaji was less lucky, yes...

They say so... like they say, Caspians were basically same as Siberians.

But i don't subscribe to it. If they can be told apart by sight, they are NOT same!
