@Sanju :

About #449: asiatic lion reintroduction into Iran ? It would be great ! Iran is a big country, not yet overpopulated (81 million inhabitants for 1,648 million km2, i.e. 50 inhabitants/km2). But it's a 100% muslim country thus lot of resistance to overcome as concerns the local populations (much more than in Gujarat region). Tigers could be reintroduced too into IRan...

That's the main bothering thing. and that's what I keep saying to @Lycaon but he has still hope on cheetahs. Huh Pak is also suitable for lions but non-friendly nation to india unlike iran.

Definitely, but they are more desperate to get lions than tigers. Leopard_Tiger exchange b/w Iran and Russia is not fruitful.
The plan is rewild tigers in Iran's hyrcan or caspain region which is also part of Caucasus.
In return, russia gets a chance to strengthen leopard population in trans-Caucasus of Russia (which has about 10 perisan leopards AFAIK).

Looks like iran is taking its first steps to return asiatic lions to iran . They will be getting a group of persica from the bristol zoo.

Return to motherland: Asiatic lion to return to Iran after 80 years (misleading title only to zoo)

*This image is copyright of its original author

Tehran Zoological Garden, also known as Eram Zoo, will be home to Asiatic lion, which was extinct in the country for almost 80 years, a veterinarian at Eram Zoo has said.

Quote:According to Iman Memarian the last remaining Asiatic lion was sighted about 80 years ago in Iran.
He went on to explain that before and after the Islamic Revolution (1979) Iran made attempts to bring back Asiatic lion to Iran, but Indians (you mean gujarati Sad @Lycaon) did not cooperate.

Tehran Zoological Garden has put in efforts to bring back Asiatic lion to Iran for 6 years, he said, adding that, “we submitted our request to the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA)”. “We also developed a lion pen which complied with EAZA's standards,” Memarian highlighted.

According to the National Geographic nearly all wild lions live in sub-Saharan Africa, but one small population of Asiatic lions exists in India's Gir Forest. Asiatic lions and African lions are subspecies of the same species.

European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) recommended that a male and a female lions will be brought to Iran, however, U.S sanctions against Iran has complicated the transfer. Huh
And now after years of collective attempts on Wednesday morning Tehran Zoological Garden will celebrate the return of the Asiatic lion to the country, Memarian concluded.

Asiatic lions once prowled from the Middle East to India. Now, only a fraction of these magnificent animals survive in the wild. Its range is restricted to the Gir National Park and environs in the Indian state of Gujarat. The Gir Forest's dry teak woods were once a royal hunting ground. Today they are a reserve where these at-risk big cats are heavily protected.

On the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, it is listed under its former scientific name Panthera leo persica as Endangered because of its small population size and area of occupancy. It was also known as "Indian lion" and "Persian lion".

Until the 19th century, it occurred in eastern Turkey, Iran, Mesopotamia, and from east of the Indus River to Bengal and South India. Since the turn of the 20th century, it is restricted to the Gir Forest National Park and surrounding areas.

Quote:Historical records in Iran indicate that it ranged from the Khuzestan Plain to the Fars in steppe vegetation and pistachio-almond woodlands. It was widespread in the country, but in the 1870s, it was sighted only on the western slopes of the Zagros Mountains, and in the forest regions south of Shiraz.
Some of the country's last lions were sighted in 1941 between Shiraz and Jahrom in Fars province, and in 1942, a lion was spotted about 65 km northwest of Dezful. In 1944, the corpse of a lioness was found on the banks of Karun River in Khuzestan province.

Conflicts with humans, wildfires, poaching, canine distemper virus, decreases in population sizes of native ungulates are of the threats to the lions.

This this issssssssss ooooossssmmmmmmmmmmmmm. See I said that before, they won't let go their precious cultural symbol shir ... I love Iran Wow

Finally Iran will save asiatic lions. For the first ever, I'm seeing asiatic lion future bright. @Lycaon @Rage2277 @smedz

But wait, that's not all this will end 4king Guj monopoly. So, that dwindling Indian grasslands will get their apex predator or key stone species or guardian to stop biodiversity loss of Savanna woodlands in India of MP and Rajasthan. Isn't that amazing? On the other hand, another key stone species- speed king going to be recovered in India. NEWS OF THE DECADE.

These specimens are lot better than guj lions to rewild and reintroduce. See the thick mane and huge size of the lions brought to Tehran Zoo. Vintage Asiatic Lion.

They are planning to reintroduced/rewilding Persian lions in the future because Officials say under this plan, they will strengthen new measures for conservation and recovery of Persian lion with the help of disease management, and other works to ensure a stable lion population in the Islamic Republic.

A pair of Asiatic lions returned to Iran after eighty years on Thursday, in a ceremony held at Tehran Zoological Garden.
The institution, also known as Eram zoo, took seven years to bring back the lions after submitting a request to the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

"We also tried for 7 years and we have finally been able to achieve necessary standards and standards that are even higher than [the] Europeans. So two Persian lions were allocated to Tehran's Eram zoo. The 6-year-old male lion from Bristol zoo [whose] name is Hirman and another 4-year-old female lion from Dublin zoo in Ireland, and her name is Ilda", explained Director Iman Memarian.

Visitors paid half-price tickets to see the lions on Thursday, and were pleased to witness the return of the species, which has been extinct in Iran for almost eighty years. "I think we did not just take back one species today, but we took back a symbol and a generation of our civilization", said Elmia Rabani Azad. Asiatic lions once were present in the Middle East and India, but today only a small number of them survive in the wild.

Persian Lion Returns to Iran after 80 Years

Quote:Iran lost its last Asiatic or Persian lion almost 80 years ago, and it became extinct in the country due to indiscriminate hunting and habitat loss, but the lion is now back home.
Under a new project, a Persian Lion has been sent from Britain’s Bristol Zoo to save the rare cat by reproducing it in the country.

Born in Britain six years ago on Christmas day, the male lion named Kamran, a son of Kamal, arrived in Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Airport on Wednesday night, and was sent to the Tehran Zoo.
A Persian lioness will also arrive soon from Ireland to help re-introduce the world’s last ranging population of Persian lion to their original habitat. shocked

Seyyed Mohammad Reza Parhizkar, the head of Tehran Zoo, says “Our main goal is to try to re-introduce this species firstly to help the generation of this animal and, secondly, to make people acquainted with our country’s wildlife.” Clap

On the return of these lions to Iran, Parhizkar said due to the membership of the Tehran Zoo in the Union of European Zoos (EAZA) these lions are returned under the program of proliferation and maintenance of endangered species.

Officials say under this plan, they will strengthen new measures for conservation and recovery of Persian lion with the help of disease management, and other works to ensure a stable lion population in the Islamic Republic.

Persian lion has now gone extinct in Iran and there are no confirmed modern records of lion presence in the country. The lions that still live in India are the same lions that once were living in Iran.

History reveals that the Persian lion went extinct as a result of the selfishness of foreign occupiers. They used to hunt the Persian lion for fun. The mistakes of the previous Iranian rulers must not be ignored either.

In the past, Persian Lions were living in south Iran.
Current weather and other physical conditions in Iran seem nice to host these lions. Fantastic Like

Now this is something we call news !!!

@Sanju

One of the main reasons why I am happy about this is that Gujarat's stranglehold on lions will be over. Plus we will probably be able to finally see truly wild asiatic lions in snowy habitat.  Like

That's secondary... all that matters now is THERE WILL BE A DISTINCT POPULATION OF LIONS OUTSIDE INDIA OR GUJARAT, SO NO RISK OF EXTINCTION !!! (and that's super cool Cool ) But one thing is sure bye bye asian cheetah Feared

I think with this renewed interest in wildlife, among Iranian will raise awareness locally about the sittuation of the asiatic cheetah so I can't say for certain that it will go extinct.

Reintroduction into Iran through the Teheran zoo, it's a first step. Good !

I hope it will continue... in a wild park.

The Teheran zoo seems good, modern, and the people enthusiasm reel.

You've been I warned enough times. Criticising the ruling government's policies is one thing & politics is another... the latter strictly forbidden here.

You're on watchlist for 2 weeks.

It's just 2 lions in a zoo enclosure, just like 200 others in atleast 20 other countries.
They haven't shown any serious intention or plans to start creating habitat or preybase for wild Asiatic lions in future.

If their performance with Asiatic cheetahs and zero progress on rewilding those Russian tigers is any indication, don't get too hopeful yet.
