850 will be the Gir Lions Population by 2020

*This image is copyright of its original author

In the primary calculation, about 600 lions are counted including 60 lions in Amreli district alone.

The number of lions in Amreli district has increased according to census performed last night. According to estimates, about 600 lions have come up from the details given by Gir officials. There are more than 60 villages have been reported in Gir and Greater Gir.

When the lion population was calculated in 2015, the number of lions was increasing and in the next five years, this number is expected to increase even more and in the next year 2020, the population will be estimated to take upto 850 individuals.

However, there is no official report yet ready to say that the number of lions has increased. Earlier, the number of lions decreased due to a virus known as Canine Distemper in Dalkhaniya .

In the primary count based on the day-to-day basis tracking and record of Gujarat Forest Department, it is estimated that more than 60 lions have been registered in Amreli district. The lion's enthusiasts are happy as the total number of lions increased to 600.

It is important that in the counting of lions in 2015, 511 lions were recorded in the whole of Gir. Currently, the lions have spread to Amreli, Greater Gir, Dhari, Gir East, Junagadh, Somnath and Bhavnagar. Of course, some details didn't come out and hiding for security reasons. However, according to the information, if population census carried out in 2020, now even if the preliminary estimate is 600 this year, the total number will be around 850 ' officials say. This is a good sign.

Abundant tourism for Gir from within and abroad.

Quote:now they want to start tourism & safari at Girnar Sanctuary too, in name of reducing pressure of Gir...

But Girnar is already facing problems of huge religious tourism pressure. Around 10-15 lacs of people go for parikrama and some 3-5 lacs for Shivratri Mela -- Jaidev Dhadhal

Jungle king’s roll-call soars at 700 in Gujarat
 Confused  shocked

700. Officials said this includes 240-odd cubs between one and two years of age. (700 lions imprisoned in Gujarat Angry )
This estimation, which comes ahead of the five-yearly lion census in 2020, puts the lion numbers at the highest ever in the history of Gujarat. There are 523 lions in the state as per 2015 lion census.

Principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) Akshay Saxena said lion conservation is a success in Gujarat despite setbacks like the 2018 canine distemper virus outbreak which wiped off 29 lions.

Fingers crossed over the healthy population, Saxena said, “The count of 700 lions is just an observation ahead of the census and there could be duplication in sighting. The exact numbers would be revealed only after the official census is completed next year.”

The Gir sanctuary, spread over 1,412 sq km, is considered the last abode of Asiatic lions in the world. After the lion population dipped to an alarming 50 in 1920, it has steadily climbed and showed sustained growth from 1985, leaping to 523 in 2015. Currently, lions are spread over an area of 25,000 sq km across six districts in Saurashtra. Significantly, an estimated half of the lion population lives in unprotected areas, in close proximity with human settlements.

Forest dept to procure 150 satellite radio collars
Considering the wide presence of lions and risks involved in their conservation, the forest department has decided to procure 150 satellite radio collars. Rajiv Gupta, additional chief secretary of forest and environment, said, “We are getting 150 radio collars to tag prides mainly in outside sanctuary areas to keep tabs on their movement and safety."

The Gujarat government has in the past given ample signs of healthy growth in lion numbers. Chief minister Vijay Rupani in 2018 had said lion population has crossed 600 due to exceptional conservation efforts Dislike . In Delhi, minister of state for forest and tribal development Raman Patkar had revealed in a press conference that lion

A video grab of a pride of 14 lions has gone viral on social media

A video of a pride of 14 lions quenching their thirst from a mad-made water pond some 20 km away from Gir sanctuary in neighbouring Amreli district went viral on social media on Thursday. Once a rare sight, videos capturing huge lion families have become rather common place with the burgeoning population of lions in Gujarat.

In the past four months alone, nearly a dozen such clips have captured people's imagination. A recent internal count undertaken by the state forest department has pegged population of big cats in Gujarat to a healthy 700.

About #1034: " By 2020, guj will be crawling with lions. Terrible.  ".

Yes, disturbing paradox: the only one place where Asiatic lions live free will be crawling with these felids...
