The Asiatic lion was first described by the Austrian zoologist Johann N. Meyer under the trinomen Felis leo persicus.

In 2017, the Asiatic lion was subsumed to Panthera leo leo due to close morphological and molecular genetic similarities with Barbary, west and central lion specimens.

Its historical range included eastern Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Mesopotamia, and from east of the Indus River in the former Sind Province to Bengal and Narmada River in Central India.

The Asiatic lion used to live in Eastern Europe (south), West, Central and South Asia in historic times.

It also occurred in Arabia, Palestine, Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Baluchistan (Pakistan). Heavy hunting by British colonial officers and Indian rulers led to a steady and marked decline of lion numbers in India.

Lions were exterminated in Palamau by 1814, in Baroda, Hariana and Ahmedabad district in the 1830s, in Kot Diji and Damoh in the 1840s.

During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a British officer shot 300 lions.

The last lions of Gwalior and Rewah were shot in the 1860s.

One lion was killed near Allahabad in 1866.

The last lion of Mount Abu in Rajasthan was spotted in 1872.

By the late 1870s, lions were extinct in Rajastan.

By 1880, no lion survived in Guna, Deesa and Palanpur, and

Only about a dozen lions were left in Junagadh district.

I had this video in my Old VHS cassete, I converted it into DVD format and uploaded it for Wildlife Enthusiasts on Youtube.

This documentary film Lion and the Lion heart is the story of a brave hearted tribe called Maldharis, dwelling in the middle of Gir Forest of Gujarat, the only habitat of Asiatic Lions. And also captured in the film, is some rare and exclusive footage of a pack of Lion, up close and personal, adding to the spectators delight.

What bonds them so well with the forest? What makes them treat the lions like pets? And not to forget the lions, staring at you from a few feet away. Hold your heart. thanks

For the first time in the nation's wildlife history, a hot air balloon has been used to shoot wildlife.

"Wild Adventures -- Ballooning with Bedi Brothers", a 13-part television series that combines the adventure sport of hot air ballooning with the thrilling art and craft of wildlife photography will be presented to viewers.

Commissioned by Prasar Bharati for Doordarshan, the entire series was shot by the Bedi Brothers, India's best-known wildlife film-makers and photographers.

The series combines the adventures of ballooning with the art of wildlife film making. In this series, they spanned the length and breadth of the sub-continent, covering as they go an entire array of wildlife, nature and the impact of humans on the environment. The series was shot with a large crew with intense support from government of India and forest department.

From 1911

the male is a masai lion and the female a "Mesopotamian" lion. Unfortunately I could not find any further info about it..

The female does have a typical Asiatic-y face compared to the male, especially the muzzle. It's so, so unfortunate that they interbred these & ruined their genetic purity.

Even though belonging to the same genetic clade as Gir lions, they would have possessed unique local traits.
Egyptian god Sekhmet looks like an Asiatic too. I guess this sculpture was based on Barbary lions of Sinai-Egypt that shared genes with Asiatics from Middle East.
