Moin Pathan:
2013 was the last time when Lions of Gir and it's surrounding had enjoyed rain shower at fullest. 2014 and 2015 was not the perfect year in terms of rain and this year Gujarat have already broke all records of heat. Of course we don't need flood but we hope 2016 will come with ample amount of rain for the wilderness of the Gir landscape.

Lion are not water lovers but food, water and area to develop their territory are three vital aspects of their survival.

Moin Pathan:

Territory observation..

Some days are lucky and some days are luckiest. There are more possibilities to observe lions early in the morning as they roam into their territory before sun goes up and increase it’s saturation. I entered inside the forest, as we were already tracking one group since long, I was calculating probabilities of the group, usually Males are absent in the group.
After 20 minutes of drive, I saw one shadow coming from the other side of the hill, it was early morning, but still you can easily predict any king of beast by his shadow and the magic happens. Mighty Male appeared with king walk stopped roared as if he was trying say “Beware I am on patrol now”

Two warriors.

Sometimes it's easy to defeat single male lion by nomadic lions but when it become a pair of brothers, it's toughest task to crack down them. Even sometimes outsider Trio can't defeat such pairs. They always have a great bonding and with such bonding they successfully handle large prides too.

WOUNDED WARRIOR

Huge Male Named :RAJU". very powerful and territorial male of it's time. lots of fight he has won to save his family and territory from the nomadic lions, sometimes 2 opponents too. i have been capturing this male since he was very young. As we all know cycle of nature, Rise and fall of the rule. his rising sun is now almost towards the sunset.. Few legends never dies..

From BBC NEWS, Famous Indian lion Ram dies of old age in Gir forest:

One of India's oldest and most popular lions in the wild has died from old age, forest officials told the BBC.

Ram was found dead on Saturday, officials at the Gir sanctuary in western Gujarat state said. He was thought to be about 15 years old. Forest officials described him as "beautiful" and "flamboyant" and said Ram was their "most photographed lion". Gir sanctuary is home to more than 500 lions and is the only habitat of Asiatic lions in the world.

Ram and his brother Shyam were a famous pair of lions that ruled over Gir forest in recent years.

"We carried out a post mortem on him to ascertain the cause of death. He died from natural causes. He was cremated in the presence of government and local village officials." deputy conservator of forests Ram Ratan Nala told the BBC.

Together with Shyam, Ram ruled over Gir forest for years

Mr Nala said Ram was loved in the neighbourhood and many forest staff in the area fasted for a day to mourn his death.

"Ram along with his brother Shyam ruled over Gir for many years and the two fathered many cubs over the years," Sandeep Kumar, who was Mr Nala's predecessor, told the BBC. "At one point, the duo had about two dozen cubs in their pride," he said.

The forest staff named the lions Ram and Shyam which are popular Indian names and also the name of a hit Bollywood film.

These cubs were born in Ram and Shyam's pride last year

Unlike tigers who do not share their territories with other males, lions generally form a coalition with another male member of their family and the two protect their territory together, Mr Kumar explained.

"But every kingdom must come to an end. With Ram now dead and Shyam getting on in years, it will get very difficult for Shyam to protect their territory and the area is likely to be taken over by other younger males soon," he added.

@Ngala:

The asiatic lions were just over a dozen a century ago...And now they are too numerous in this place, in this park. Therefore they seek to occupy new spaces close to the Gir sanctuary. In short all these lions descend from this small dozen individuals in a space now too limited. Diffuse consanguinity ? I would be not surprised...

Famous quote 'All Asiatic lions are descendants of a doze lions' is just a cock and bull story!! Now they are 523+ so i don't think they are in-breed animals if that is so all Siberian Tigers and Sumatran Tigers and West African lions are also in-breed which are lesser than 500. Cool

That squint may be photo angle or 1/2 lions blood line or because of some injury in past or some xyz reason!
