"We were following the herd of buffalo and hoping to encounter the Selati Boys that had been tailing the herd for a couple of days.  Suddenly we heard the distress call from a buffalo.  George, the very experienced ranger from Inyati Private Game Lodge put the Land Cruiser into gear and we crashed through the bushes in the direction of the sound. In less than a minute we were looking at a standoff between the 'Selati Male Lion Coalition' and some very upset and disturbed buffaloes."

"The buffalo that had made the distress call was down and kicking.  This was less than five minutes after the initial distress call. The rest of the buffalo started moving closer and getting more and more upset with the lions.  George, our ranger from Inyati Private Game Lodge parked the Land Cruiser in the best location possible so we would have a grandstand view of the unfolding events, a standoff between the 'Selati Male Lion Coalition' and the herd.  With the lions defending their 'kill' and the buffalo wanting to recover a member of the herd."

"After the Selati defence is broken, the skinny one (Selati #2) is left behind holding on desperately to his meal. The buffalo rally for a further rescue attempt and toss him, forcing him to run away.  After the last of the Selati Lions moves off, the buffalo manage to get the wounded buffalo miraculously back onto her feet after having had lions at her throat for over 5 minutes!  We spent some time looking on, and then moved off to attempt to relocate all four of the Selatis, and to see if there were any visible injuries from the encounter."

Selati #2 was the one that was holding on the the buffalo's throat in the kill zone. He also the one that stood fast and did not let go and run until the other buffalo's tossed him off the kill...

This was one year after they killed Mr. T. Selati 2's health deteriorated quickly, having looked good in November 2012, and then by April 2013 he is very thin and sickly looking. My guess would be TB, from his appearance, and sadly that is a very painful and prolonged way to go. Reply
