"A las 04h30 suena la alarma. Era el cuarto día de ir en bote desde las 05h00 hasta casi las 14h00 por el río Tambopata, en busca de jaguares. No habíamos tenido éxito y se nos acababan los días en "Tambopata Research Center" (Rainforest Expeditions Lodges) , un lugar con una de las tasas más altas de avistamiento de jaguares en Sudamérica (el 23% aproximadamente en la orilla del río).
Me levanto y don Pedro, nuestro guía, empieza a gritar desesperadamente que estamos tarde y nos va a dejar el bote. Cojo las cosas apurado y me doy cuenta que olvidaba la tarjeta de memoria de mi cámara en la habitación. Después de cogerla y ya llegando al bote para embarcar, veo una huella de jaguar. Camino 10 metros más y veo a mi guía, a Jaime y al canoero escondidos tras de un tronco fotografiando algo en el borde de bosque, justo en el puerto principal del lodge, frente a las canoas... ¡ahí estaba! Un adormitado gato meneaba la cola y nos miraba con toda la confianza del mundo, sabiendo perfectamente que es el rey de la selva. Solo faltó que salga humo de mi cámara.
Ahora mientras reviso las fotos, no puedo creer que él vino a buscarnos y nos permitió hacerle una gran sesión de fotos por casi 10 minutos."
