Lions will not consume overly rotten carcass, they are not hyenas or vultures, bad smell is enough for them to not consume it.
If that was not the case, we would se a lot of dead lions around, as for lions, overly rotten carcass is pretty comon to find in the wild.
I believe that a likely scenario is the waterhole that the Kambulas recently drinked at was contaminated. If this is the case, hopefully officials can barricade to waterhole to prevent further casualties
