Lions of Timbavati

Seems as if Machaton males may have challengers at hand in Balule. According to a posting in Facebook, two new coalitions (the four Maseke males and the three Strydom males) are in their territory.
Currently there are three Machaton males though one has TB and is reportedly not in a good condition. I recall that when they initially displaced the Mohlabetsi coalition there were three males who were--according to a report--joined later on by a fourth male. The fourth male had a limp that it had carried since they went nomadic. I haven't seen or heard anything about the fourth male since and I assume he has either perished or has split from his brothers for good. They have controlled the area for three years now and I assume would have a few adult cubs. Their legacy should be secure. Image credit: Heidi Meintjes

The highlight of the week came from the lions no doubt, and we were fortunate enough to pick up some members of the River Pride/Nharhu males on most outings, but it was the discovery of three new members of the pride towards the end of the week that got us all excited. Britt and I headed out for a Sofa Safari and found fresh tracks for a male lion walking along the Nhlaralumi, and whilst looking for him, spotted not only our known lioness and her three cubs, but alongside her was the second mother lioness with her three 8-week old cubs all gathered together! It is quite a treat to know that you are the first people to see such adorable baby cubs! They spent the day in the riverbed at one of the pride’s original den sites, and we are keeping fingers crossed that they remain in the area for the next few days. In fact, Thursday was one of those rare days when we saw all the members of the pride – but what seems to be their ‘way’, they were all doing their own thing. The limping male continues to wander alone, or spend time with the two “non-mothers”, but his timing was clearly off as late in the week, we found those lionesses mating with the other two Nharhu males (with some luck, the six cubs will have a few “cousins” in the next four months). Lion dynamics might change soon. I have not seen much lion around the last 3 weeks. The Avoca's moved south and south east of us. The Xikukutsus was around Thornybush west. Monwana and Giraffe prides unknown to their whereabouts. The Black-dam male killed a buffalo on his own and is in good condition. He has a limp he picked up in the kill but can not see any swollen parts. Also saw the 2 Monwana males yesterday. I don't have any confirmation though.

A short History of the Nharhu Males since they have arrived in Timbavati
The Nharhu Males arrived in The Timbavati last year in September and have been the dominant males of the river pride since then. They chased off the two mbiri males, and are presently the biggest coalition of three males. In September / October 2019 they mating succesfully with the River pride females, And around beginning of February 2020, They became fathers of the River pride cubs, 3 Cubs. 2 Male and 1 Female. However a few years ago. Other member of the River pride has give a birth 3 cubs. Now the River Pride is made up of 4 Adult Females 6 Cubs and the Three Nharhu. A few weeks ago the Nharhu have been seen mating with the two "non-mothers", The limping male continues to wander alone, or spend time with the two "non-mothers", but his timing was clearly off as late in the week , we found those lionesses mating with the other two Nharhu males (with some luck, the six cubs will have a few "cousins" in the next four months). The Nharhu Coalition is made up of three males. Scar-lipped or Limping male "Slit-Nose” "Scarface" (This is the oldest male of the three and have a bit broken the lower tooth) They are sired by old River pride males Hondo and Xantshema. 2 Scorro males pushing into north Timbavati around Motswari and trying to claim Western pride for quite some time now, but old River pride males Hondo and Xantshema from the north are also interested in those lionesses:
