Two mature male Lions that have been commonly seen on the reserve for the past few days have finished their recent Cape Buffalo carcass and seem very content with life as they rest in an open area.
A Northern Matimba male that was seen close to our Eastern boundary with Kruger National Park. This veteran of a male was in very bad shape and didn't present much of a visual.

Over the week end we saw a pride of 14 lions taking down 2 buffalos. The 1 buffalo fell after just 10 minutes while the other large male buffalo didn't go down without a fight and took the pride just over 30 minutes to finally get the bull buffalo off his feet. An epic battle between buffalo and lion.
It wasn't 24 hours before the two Matimba male lions chased the pride off their two kills, running to save the lives of their cubs. Video to follow shortly.

Like I always say, it only takes a couple of willing males that aren't interested in backing down, and all the "strong and independent" bitchiness of the Southern pride goes away fairly quickly.

Well, I saw a beautiful lioness being a badass in that video! The way she continues to feed herself and vocalize while hb and ginger move in on the tribes (pride) sustenance is pretty epic.
I love these southern matimbas too.. it seemed like they were willing to share the meal with her in that short video... but obviously the lionesses chose to protect their cubs and ditch the scene.
They probably all know each other from that time before the birmingham boys arrived on the scene...

All will depend considering how fit the Matimbas are to take control and then how able they are at keeping it, particularly with younger coalitions like the Tsalala or the Avoca males.

Exactly. Taking it isn't that much of a thing because they're not having competition.
Keeping it, though, that's going to be a different matter, usually by the same metrics: They're only two, but this time they're older and they're injured, at least now. And it's only going to get more difficult.
After searching for these two male lions last night we came across them early this morning resting alongside a road. After a good yawn and stretch, they made their way over the road, startling a couple nearby kudu.
