Killing of Mapogo Offsprings the Sand River Males and lionesses by Humans
Statement of Willem botha: "everybody blame and critisice te white people in the photo who was involved in the shooting of the lions. the big culprits are the three chiefs of dumphries village who insisted thats the lions should be destroyed after eating their cattle. we attempted to bait and dart the lions and take them back to the sabi sands but members of the local population on instruction of the chiefs chased the lions away from the bait. they also threatened members of the sabi sands and mtpa with violence should we attempt to dart the lions. at one stage we wanted to leave the area the but were blocked by the local population and were told that we could not leave before the lions were destroyed. that was when a group of huntets with their dogs from lydenburg was called to assist the authorities. dreadlocks also left the reserve in the north of the reserve at the kokovelo river where he on various occasions left the reserve to seek easy prey in the community outside the reserve. there he was caught in a snare which was set near a carcass of a cow which he caught the previous night." after he was asked if that means that dreadlocks was killed by the local population here is his answer: "yes. as was many other animals that left the reserve."

Djuma Bush News Posted June 30, 2009 by sun safaris Bush Lodge
Lion highlights at Bush Lodge have mainly included the Styx pride of lions, which are still seen in and around the lodge. The complete pride and nine cubs were seen almost every week; however the Nkahuma lion pride has not been seen for almost a month. Hopefully they will be back soon. Vuyatela General game viewing has been great this month at Vuyatela; especially with the presence of different pride of lions. The other factor attracting these prides of lions is the presence of breeding herds of buffaloes. Two male lions, new to Djuma property were seen feeding on a buffalo kill. The Mapogo pride of lions is back as well; however this time it was only two of them, their faces covered in blood. By the looks of it, they had been in a fight. The Styx pride is trying to settle on the Djuma property even though the competition is strong from the Kuhuma pride that always come and go. The lone Manyeleti boy, male lion, has been seen along the Northern boundary, after a long absence, perhaps he is looking for some company as he has been on his own for some time. Sandy Patch, lone lioness, is still hanging in there with her three cubs that are growing each and every day. She has been successful in killing. The Windmill pride of lions is also pushing deeper to our reserve from Mala Mala. These Sightings have been Viewed at Djuma Bush & Vuyatela
