On our way back to Earth Lodge we found tracks of lions, so we decided to attempt a quick follow up before returning to the lodge for breakfast. Ruan and his tracker Donald decided to track on foot where they found more tracks of the lions heading further west into our reserve. They returned to their vehicle and made their way around the area and were duly rewarded when they found two young males with a young female on a buffalo carcass they managed to take down. They were all lying next to the kill, panting heavily as they had had their fair share of meat already. 

Vultures were already busy gathering in the area and with these lions being in the territory of other lions, they will try and finish this kill as quickly as possible and move on, as they know vultures diving down will attract the attention of nearby predators that might lead to trouble for them.

As for BDMs, I wonder if our suspection of health issues was wrong (or partly wrong, we still dont know if smaller maned male has health issues or no), and that these guys have bond issues instead?

For duo, most important thing is bond, and for his brother to just abandon him like that, in a matter of days, and travel away ~30km, is very strange.

Strong bond duos dont do that.

And its not first time, remember 2021 and when these 2 first show up in Manyeleti, days after smaller maned male was seen alone in Sabi Sands getting attacked by Kambulas and after that seen with NK male in company. Only to reunite with his borther, (who prob returned back to Timbavati),weeks/month after in Timbavati.

These 2 males are quite hard to figure out. Reply

I am extremely confused but very intrigued so both males seen together one is throwing up next time they are seen it’s only one he he is being submissive to the talamati male his brother is not present then the bigger brother is seen all the way in timbavati no idea what he is trying to do but he is submissive to a younger male in sabi sands but doing a ton of roaring far north and now it turns out he did leave his brother behind and the only thing I can take from it his his brother is sick and unable to do much which is why he isn’t seen a lot Reply

Most likely the missing lion was severely handicapped earlier, either due to sickness, hunting accident or fight.
Forcing the other to make a difficult decision and abandon him. A decission based on assumptions that later turned out to be incorrect as the lion later recovered. Which also explains why he wasnt seen for a while.


Keep in mind that lions are not medically trained and cant communicate their condition and concerns with eachother. So severe mistakes like these happen. Reply

Knowing the Kambulas, BDM is safe even if he goes to share with them. Maybe he could take over the carcass for himself

These two Hamilton YMs are most likely the sons of the N’wawitnotso Males. They have another designation that I forget. s125? Maybe? Reply

If they are from Hamiltons pride then yes, they are sons of s125/Nwaswitsotso males.

You sure its BDM and not one of Hamiltons young males? Kambulas are like double the size of him.
