Cat Finds Cat – Tiger and Civet, Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, Karnataka

It is one of the best places to experience a wildlife safari full of surprises and thrills. It is a privilege to see nature’s inhabitants in their natural habitat, displaying raw emotions.On a cool February afternoon in 2020, we started on our jungle safari. Soon we were all excited as we sighted a huge male tiger resting on the bund of a waterhole. Initially he appeared to be very calm. But there seemed to be some uneasiness that he was displaying. Soon, he stood up and looking up at the trees, seemingly trying to smell something. We couldn’t understand his behaviour, but after a while the tiger decided to move on. It was then that our attention was drawn towards a small mammal resting on a tree – an Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus)! The palm civet is nocturnal, primarily moving about after dusk. Seeing it in broad daylight was indeed a rare sighting. But we couldn’t fathom why the civet was making the tiger was uncomfortable!

A Tiger sighted in the middle of a coffee plantation in Rajapura, a small hamlet in Virajpet Taluk of Kodagu District in Karnataka yesterday (May 2) evening. Wonderfully shot by Dinesh Adengada (a coffee planter) and his spouse during an evening stroll through the estate.   *This image is copyright of its original author mithunhphotography-he best part about tracking the Black Panther is his territory edges the core which is not accessible. So most of the other cats here have probably seen very few or have never seen another vehicle in their lifetime. Hence they are extremely secretive and usually bolt before we even see them. Their presence is usually felt through the intense alarm calls of the prey animals which most times indicate the Cat must have been out in the open and we must have missed it by seconds. .But occasionally we come across sights like this where we are treated to some new faces in the undergrowth. He was a new entrant to this land and was here to challenge the old Baraballe Male. He stayed put around the area for a week roaring continuously to announce his presence. One of the most handsome males I have ever seen. . The joy of discovering new cats in familiar territory is unparalleled. On safari with @anjana1612 @rahuls0107
Zhaayynn James: " Summer is usually the time that people get excited about photographing tigers, because as water sources dry up, the chances of seeing tigers at specific locations like perennial waterholes increase. Tigers love to spend the hottest parts of the day immersed in the water to beat the heat and these are also the best spots to ambush prey, as eventually animals will come down to the water to slake their thirst. "
