RE: Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project - Rishi - 03-14-2019

In 2006 the Central Zoo Authority of India banned the breeding Indian-African cross lions before which captive Asiatic lions in Indian zoos were haphazardly interbred with African lions confiscated from circuses, leading to genetic pollution in the captive Asiatic lion stock.

There was an immediate shutdown of the European and American endangered species breeding programs for Asiatic lions, as its founder animals were captive-bred Asiatic lions originally imported from India and were ascertained to be intraspecific hybrids of African-Asian lions.

DNA fingerprinting studies of Asiatic lions have helped in identifying individuals with high genetic variability, which can be used for conservation breeding programs.

This is good news. In election campaign for Lok sabha polls, MP (Member of Parliament) canditates of MP (Madhya Pradesh). They promised Sheopur division people to bring lions to palpur and solving many social issues towards development of Sheopur district of MP.

In addition to this, the lion in Kuno-Palpur, which has taken the district forward on the path of development, also raised voice over the ground.

Currently, no further progress. The villages of 413 km2 area are in the process of shifting outside which is being added to Kuno as it was declared as National Park few months back, in particular that area is core zone of National Park. Modi was urged to look into matter of relocation by MP CM. Due to silence from Central govt even after writing a letter, MP congress govt said it'll again file a case on non-implementation of SC order of lion reintroduction project and will approach SC soon.

As there is election heat in MP for parliamentary elections and Gujarat for both Assembly and Parliamentary elections. So, parties are campaigning for votes. Officials are busy in election conduction under guidance of election commission of India. So, all these type of projects are shelved for a while. Works may get resumed after these elections. Hopefully at least.

RE: Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project - Sanju - 04-30-2019

@Lycaon Iran may gradually captive breed them - rewild/rehabilitate them - reintroduce them finally. I seriously doubt that coz, they didn't rewild amur tigers in Caspian region and some died in captivity.

When India n Iran in deal to exchange their flagship species. In the 1970s, Arzhan National Park was considered as a site for its reintroduction. (https://books.google.co.in/books?id=esV0hccod0kC&lpg=PP1&pg=PP1&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false; https://books.google.co.in/books?id=t2EZCScFXloC&lpg=PA66&pg=PP1&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false). It comes under Lake Parishan Eco-region which has two Protected Zones i.e.., Zone of Arzhan and Parishan. lake in this area is that of Arzhan. The whole, protected area is called "Arzhan National Park."

There was a plan to bring in Gir lions during 1977, but there were issues, and it did not get fulfilled. This area includes the village of Arzhan, and is of agricultural importance, and bringing in lions would mean setting aside farmland, and settling farmers elsewhere.

https://books.google.co.in/books?id=esV0hccod0kC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA77&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false
https://books.google.co.in/books?id=t2EZCScFXloC&pg=PA66&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false

This happens to be a reason why it is difficult to reintroduce lions from Gir Forest to another place within India.

https://books.google.co.in/books?id=EU3inCiGFYYC&pg=PA126&redir_esc=y&hl=en#v=onepage&q&f=false

Nevertheless, Iran's intention to restore its population of lions would continue into the 21st century.

RE: Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project - Lycaon - 04-30-2019

@Sanju

I do feel that iran will have wild asiatic lions in the future since the lion is culturally significant in iran. I personally don't see why they wouldn't reintroduce them .
