As the temperatures soar to triple the value in the mornings, a seemingly tired mother lounges under the shade, while her son keeps a watchful eye on the surroundings. Is he Tadoba’s knight in shining armour and the vigilant protector? Maya, a name ubiquitous with every tourist to Tadoba, is the queen of the prey rich territory that spans across P1, P2, Tadoba and Jamunbodi lakes, a territory she inherited from her mother. Unfortunately, the area teems with male tigers, a couple of them in their prime. Each big cat wants to have its own ruling line and they kill the litter that doesn’t belong to them. It has been close to two years since Maya delivered a litter of 3 cubs, widely supposed to have come from a huge and elusive male called ‘Narasimha’. The cubs grew up safely under the watchful and protective eye of their parents. But in the absence of Narasimha, other opportunistic males appeared. (Some say, the cubs are from Gabbar, another prime male, but we will never know for sure) At the crescendo of their infant life, a male tiger called ‘Matkasur’ trailed Maya and chased the cubs, that ran for their life. The whereabouts of a male and female cub were unknown since. Maya, now, stayed put and kept a close watch on her lone surviving son. Since, he was too young and inept, she stayed with him at times, making a kill for him now and then. She would often leave her son alone, kept him whimpering on occasions – I personally witnessed one such occasion; what doesn't break one, makes one stronger. A prime male, Gabbar, father of Maya’s earliest litter, returns from exile (an epithet for buffer) and mates with Maya and leaves. Meanwhile, Matkasur forces Maya to mate with him – she initially denies but any defiant measures would lead to a doubt that the bigger and stronger male tiger would threaten her or her son. A third male Bokha, another prime, mated with Maya. It may not be uncommon in wild for a tigress to mate with many tigers, but for a doting mother, to keep her and her son alive, it is. The tigress seems to have taken a leaf out of Darwinian evolution – ‘It is not the strongest of the species that survives, but the one most adaptable to change’. He may be the white knight who protects his mother in the light, but she’s the dark knight, a silent protector and a watchful guardian. some of the information is wrong, Narasimha wasn't around back then and it was Navegaon male that was sighted with Maya and the cubs a while back, Maya was apparently keeping him away from the cubs and to everyone's surprise. he did not act aggressive towards the cubs. a rare behavior of an adult male tiger peacefully co-existing with cubs that weren't his own.  *This image is copyright of its original author Navegaon male and Maya's cub from a distance  *This image is copyright of its original author Navegaon male with the cubs, Maya in the back. sadly, at only 11 months of age. all the cubs unwillingly dispersed from Maya towards the end of May/2016 and with 4 males in town, Maya's cubs lives were in grave danger and all of them dissappeared. only Chota Namdev was sighted again in September and has since reunited with mom. the fate of the other two are unknown and I have no doubt that they're still surviving and forest department recently confirmed that they're alive and kicking and I think i believe them. the cubs were observed making kills at 10 months of age, Maya taught them well. infact the picture that i posted a few post back was a kill made by the cubs themselves.  *This image is copyright of its original author

that's Narasimha, one of the older males of Tadoba who survived most of his life outside tourism zone. he has cubs with Jarna female around Navegaon buffer. he used to control most of Navegaon up to the gate but as of recent, one of Namdev's 4 year old son showed up and has taken over most of Navegaon gate area. even the old Navegaon male has tried effortessly to settle down near Pandherpauni and Navegaon but due to high activity of males, it's not an easy task for him.

"Badshah of Bandipur" Bandipur Tiger Reserve  *This image is copyright of its original author I did a bit of a search in this word, since I didn't understand what it meant. Shah (derived from Persian word sah) means Emperor/King. Badshah word came from the original superlative persian word Padishah meaning master king (pad means master in Persian) or great king. Thus, a great king could be called a Badshah. Fitting words for the great Prince. I asked the photographer how was he doing and if he had come to blows with his recent rival, this was his response: He is doing great , Yes he did come to blows with his much younger rival leaving the rival with a limping leg, Both are doing fine and we're seen yesterday.

that's Namdev and Nak katti's 4.5 year old son (early 2012 born)that has taken over most of Narasimha's former territories and has been pushing all the males out of the area, powerful young male ruthlessly establishing his territory.

Is Kolara buffer ready for a war?
December/12/2016  *This image is copyright of its original author New Male Tiger Sighted at Kolara Buffer on 12th Dec 2016. About his Bloodline (Male Tiger V7) A new male was sighted at kolara buffer area on 12th December 2016 near Kankajari Area in the afternoon game drive. One of the Guide Ravi Clicked his picture in an impression of Kankajari Male and showed to me that he got a good sighting of Kankajari male, but after looking for images it was sure that he was not a Kankajari Male after cross checking with old images from 2008 finally got his bloodline. He grew up in a high profile and photogenic family within a large happy litter. V7 grew up as part of a family of four siblings in 2008, under the watchful eye of a male Crooked Tail (Yeda Anna) and his mother Vasanti. Malika and Sonia were his sisters and V6 his beloved brother they all grew up to adulthood around the area known as Vasant Bandara. Seen often as cubs, they learnt to hunt together early with good coordination between the cubs, often bringing down large Sambar deer in the rocky hills of Jamunjhora. His relationship though with is sisters was never close, and as soon as they were sub adults they parted company and where then seen only in sibling pairs, with the two brothers keeping each other company until Katezari Male, a threatening and domineering male arrived one day on the scene, next day both brother disappeared and now in 2016 after a 7 years gap he was sighted in Kolara Buffer Area.... One more example. When Cubs have left mother’s range and not established range of their own is known as the transient stage. Female cubs usually carve out a range out of their mother. But the male cubs have to travel much farther to establish their range. They usually scrounge around the fringes of the forest for a few years, silently foraging for food and traversing the territories of many resident males. This is why mortality rates are much higher among male’s transient floaters than among females. December/28/2016  *This image is copyright of its original author On 28th Dec 2016 Morning safari one new male was sighted near CN no 244 in Kolara Zone II. A male tiger who started his journey as a young boy from Pandherpauni in 2014 hiding himself from Gabbar & Katezari male (Tyson) and slowly, slowly in one month he travelled to Mohurli and settled down in Mohurli range with his Queen as a King guarding her and in a year he was the Man of many Female’s. A month back in Nov 2016 he was sighted at kosaikanar road, Crossing the meadows and moving to Devdho area. Now this will be a shocking one on 28th Dec 2016 he was in Kolara Buffer as usual, no guide will be expecting a Mohurli Dominant Male Tiger in kolara buffer zone. Ahsish Guide updated me that 2 males and 1 female was sighted in morning ride and all 3 tigers were not the same tiger which are sighted frequently. Finally asked for the image and got it from one of the visitors who had clicked the photographs and in one look the tiger was recognized, but again I was confused that I can be wrong and match the photographs with Bajrang image, which I have and finally I was correct. He was sighted near Karva Check post and walked towards Veergao Check post...I think he came from the Fireline of Khatoda which direct connects to kolara buffer CN no 244 and Bajrang is very close to the area of other males which are controlling it. He is marking his territory near CN no 244 and Veergao Check post close to Kankajari area which is controlled by two different males now and the return of Bajrang means a clash of the claw. Photo Credit:- Shasank Gupte & Sharmili Chauvan Kankajhari Male  *This image is copyright of its original author This male Tiger is from the litter of Katezhari female and Katezhari male (Tyson), which was born in 2011. This litter had 2 females and one male cub, which were mostly seen near the Jamun Jhora waterhole of Tadoba Range in 2014-15. The mother is now most likely dead. As an adult Tiger,Kankazhari male first began to appear in the Kolara buffer since 2015. Now he controls a large area of the Kolara buffer and crosses the Jamni Road to reach the waterhole near Jhari/Old Kolara gate which comes under core area and probably he is the father of Sharmili cubs from kolara buffer. Being shy, his movement is mostly known from pugmarks. It was difficult to confirm his identity, as we have only got his left flank photos. But as you can see from the photos in the collage, his head stripes also match exactly . This is a very special Tiger as this is the first male Tiger which we have been able to identify with surety that was born in TATR and as an adult has also made his territory in Tadoba Range. Photo Credit:- Sudeep Mehta Arpit Parekh Jignesh Patel Mr Ajeet & Pranad Patil  *This image is copyright of its original author May/2016 - Kankajhari's summer weight this year was incredible, he's a large male and still growing at a fast rate. Who rules Kolara Buffer? after Namdev left the core, he shifted to Kolara buffer and shortly after the monsoons of 2015. Kankajhari male emerged as the ruler of Kolara buffer and ruled almost the entire buffer. On Dec/12/2016, guides saw a different male in Kankajhari's territory and with the help of Jignesh Patel. they were able to identify the male tiger as the son of Yeda Anna (V7) from their 2008 litter and he's 9 years old, Kankajhari was born late Nov-Dec 2011 so he's just about 5 years old, Bajrang is 6-7 and Matkasur is April 2012 born so he's just 4.5 years old and he also has territory in Kolara buffer that overlaps Kankajhari's. both are half brothers and sons of Katezari male. Dec/28/2016, guides again saw 2 male and 1 female that day and again with the expertise of Jignesh Patel. they were able to identify the male as Bajrang. now with the evidence of four males active around Kolara Buffer, is it finally time for Kankajhari to get into action? I find it amazing that there's literally no record of Matkasur and Kankajhari fighting, despite the fact that they both had overlapping territories for a while. I'm not quiet sure what Bajrang was doing in Kolara buffer, he's well settled with 4 females. he rules parts of Mohurli buffer, Moharli, Khutvanda, Teliya, Wagdoh area and now he has made an amazing journey as far as Kolara buffer. V7 seems like a formidible opponent but not a prime male and i think if confronted by Kankajhari, he will have to be on his guard to counter the might of the young ruler. 2017 is going to be an interesting year all over Tadoba. all the credits to Jignesh Patel for the info, the legend of Tadoba! check out their facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1039545202807538/ |
