Wolf 34M (Chief Joseph Alpha Male) (1997) (Badly injured)

"In January 1997, #34M made an out-of-territory foray across the northern range and through the territories of three other wolf packs. He was photographed on one occasion being attacked and badly injured by five of the Druid Peak wolves. It is interesting that he survived this encounter. It is likely that he also received wounds in an attack by the Rose Creek wolves. Not surprisingly, he retreated back to his former territory, but was accompanied by two 21-month-old sisters from the Rose Creek Pack (#16F and #17F). The three were located together with #33F in late January."

Wolf 35M, 30F (Thorofare Alphas) and a pup (1998)

"In January 1998, the Soda Butte Pack trespassed onto the Thorofare Pack’s territory, killing the alpha male (#35) and likely causing the death of the alpha female (#30) and one pup [Killed by an Avalanche while fleeing the pack supposedly] . When we visited the site where #35 was found, only hair, urine, blood, and his collar remained in a wind- blown concavity underneath a log along the Yellowstone Lake shoreline. "

Wolf 40F (Alpha Female of Druid Peak) (2000)

"On May 8, 2000, alpha female #40 was found wounded on the side of the road in Lamar Valley and died soon afterward. Independent necropsies by both the Yellowstone Wolf Project and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks lab in Bozeman, Montana, concluded that the death had resulted from an attack by other wolves. Multiple wounds riddled her body, and

many of the teeth marks were the same distance apart as a wolf’s canine teeth. Of all the wolf cacrasses that have been recovered and determined killed by other wolves in Yellowstone, #40’s was the most mutilated. How could such an event happen? Wolves, including dethroned

alphas, commonly depart from packs for various reasons—but killed by other wolves? What follows are the events that led to #40’s death. "

"As the alpha female, #40 totally dominated #42, often so brutally that she relinquished her attack only after her sister assumed complete submission: tail tucked, on her back, licking #40s’ face. Number 40 bit and held #42

with the restraint typical of within-pack dominance fights, but the bites she delivered were undoubtedly painful. In 1999, when #42 dug a den hole and localized around it, she was attacked by #40, who had produced a litter of her own. It is not known if #42 had any pups; pseudopregnancy was possible, but after the attack #42 was not found by her den hole again. "

"In 2000, three females in the Druid Peak pack (#40, #42, and #106) produced a total of 21 pups. The three mothers had separate dens, but the two non-breeding adult females in the pack, #103 and #105 (daughters of #41 or #42), showed an affinity for #42s’ den, not visiting #40s’ or #106’s dens. For the most part, #40 and #42 remained apart; only two encounters were observed in six weeks, when #40 was seen briefly visiting #42’den site without incident. The alpha male (#21) stayed primarily with #40 at the traditional Druid Peak den site, but he did make regular visits to #42s’ den and possibly to #106s’ den. "

On the evening of May 7, at about the same time that #42 and #105 left #42’s den and traveled toward #40’s

den, #40 left her den accompanied by #21 and traveled toward them. The wolves met in the Chalcedony Creek area, where #40 immediately attacked #42 and then #105. Both attacks were vicious and both #42 and #105 submit- ted to #40. After the attacks all four wolves headed

toward #42’s den near Amethyst Creek, when it became too dark for further observation. The next morning, #40 was found by the road fatally wounded. She had probably sought the road as the lesser of two evils, knowing the other wolves would avoid the pavement, which was associated with humans. "

No radio-collared wolves from other packs were located in LamarValley, and it is unlikely that other wolves would have made such an attack, given that #42’s den was in the center of Druid Peak pack territory, not

near the edge where a trespass would be moer likely. Instead, years of abuse of her female pack members had caught up with #40, and the period when #40 and #42 were apart after denning probably contributed to the strengthening of social bonds between #42, #103, and #105 and the weakening of ties with #40.

"When she neared #42’s den, her proximity to #42’s pups could have caused a strong reaction from #42 that brought the help of #103 and #105, and a three-versus-one fight ensued."

After #40’s death, both #42 and #106 moved their litters to what had been #40s’ den. During the rest of the summer, all of the pups were raised by the pack operating as a cohesive unit, and 20 pups were still alive at year-

end. Number 42 assumed the role of alpha female and

was not observed aggressively dominating any other wolf in the pack. "

Note "Big Brown" [778M] & "Big Blaze" [838M] are of Druid Origin although their parents are not certain. In 2007-2008, Year of birth of those two ; the alpha is 480M and 569F, 302M is the beta. 302M/480M are brothers. All 3 bred. 778M was one of the yearlings/young adults who followed 302M into forming the Blacktail Deer Plateau. That particular behavior could and is why i suggest 778M is the son of 302M instead of 480M [he would have likely stayed with 480M].

This theory/suggestion/speculation, although the grandfathers of the wolves is already known since both mothers and fathers of the parents of 778M are the same [7F/2M for 302M & 480M & 286F/21M for 569F]

This create a new branch to the lineage of :

- 4M [Father of 2M]

- 5F [Mother of 2M]

- 9F [Mother of 7F & 21M]

- 10M [Father of 21M]

- 21M [Father of "Half-Black" & 286F] [If i am right : he bred his grand-daughter] [42/21M -----> Half-Black-----> 286F] [529F is his daughter, grand-daughter & great grand-daughter]

- 27F/28M [Parents of 48F]

- 39F [Mother of 42F]

Wolf 42F (Alpha Female of the Druid Pack)

"All of the 31 originally reintroduced wolves are deadThe last to die was wolf #41F, originally of the Druid Peak pack, who was shot in a control action east of the park. She had a severe case of mange at the time of deathThe last wolf to die in the park was her sister, #42, who was with the Druid Peak pack when she was killed by wolves from Mollie’s pack in late January 2004. All wolves currently alive in the population are descendants of reintroduced wolves."

"Number 42 died of natural causes on February 1, 2004. Her remains were found at the west end of Specimen Ridge, near a bull elk carcass. It appeared that other wolves had killed her, probably Mollie’s pack, whose territory centers around Pelican Valley"

"The Druid and Mollie’s wolves likely encountered each other at the carcass site and fought. Nearly nine years old at the time of her death, #42 was the last of the original Canadian wolves still living in the park. When another of #42’s sisters [41F] died in Sunlight Basin two weeks after #42, all of the original reintroduced wolves were dead."

Excelent information, congratulations!!!

Just one little question about this male wolf. The information says a weight of "75 lb as an alpha male". Is there an error in that figure? Maybe is 175 lb?

Thanks.

No, it isn’t a error. The biggest wolf of YNP history was wolf #760M.

It weighed 148 pounds with an empty stomach in 2012.

I know that because i red about this wolf weight. Wolves sometimes, when darted for collaring, puke food.

This wolf, who was also captured in 2011 at 113 lbs, had this event. Only that nothing except bile came out of his mouth.

Wolf researchers found that wolves can stored up to 10 kg of meat (22 lbs) in their stomach.

Wolf 760M would have weighed 170 lbs if he was full

To come back to #34M weight, i find it interesting too.

You aren’t the first to mention it, Dale Earnfart (Carnivora) also did.

My hypothesis is that it might have overcome a disease or some thing like this or it is simply an exception in all alphas.

It is hard to contact the biologists Douglas Smith or Rick McIntyre.

I haven’t been able to find how to contact them for this information about #34M
