It's odd to see, that the breakaway lionesses have to mate with the matshapiri males to protect their cubs and that there is not enough support by the matimba males.

January 10th: The 2 Matshapiri males were found early this morning, mating with one of the breakaway lionesses. Later in the afternoon 4 of the lionesses were seen hunting impala on our airstrip when the 2 males burst onto the scene roaring and chased after the lionesses. 
January 11th. 6 lion sightings: the Matshapiri males covered a huge distance last night (15-20km) and were found near Hyena Waterhole this morning. The Eyrefield pride were a mere 200m from them but both were unaware of the others presence. 1 of the breakaway lionesses was viewed in front of Main Camp and another was seen in the lower reaches of the Mlowathi River. 3 unidentified male lions were seen in the south as were 2 other young males.

A long time has passed since I have seen these two powerful figures; the Matshipiri coalition. After spending the majority of the past 12 months around the Sand River in our southern corner, the males have started widening their range after strengthening buffalo herds are no longer forced to reside around the river and can seek water elsewhere. It's still to early to call... It is very unsettled with the Majingilane, Matimba and Matsipiri males all still fighting for territory over Londolozi! jayfeps9 @callumgowar poor matimba seem to be getting the short end of the stick. Any idea if matshapiri have got into contact with majingilane yet? And I also noticed HB matimba has been seen with injuries to his back. Is that from his recent scuffle with the matshapiri boys? callumgowar @jayfeps9 The Matsipiri males ran from the Majingilane the other day but no physical contact. Yes, injury caused by Matsipiri we suspect!

A male lion from the Matshipiri coalition walks right past our vehicle this morning. He had recently stolen the remains of a wildebeest kill from the Mhangeni Breakaway pride, hence the distended stomach. He walked and roared throughout the morning until he relocated the pride who had since settled near a waterhole, the spot we eventually left them at. The same male with one of the girls. January 29th. Heavy rain early this morning saw the Manyelethi, Mlowathi, Matshapiri and Kapen rivers flowing into the Sand River. 2 lion sightings: the 2 Matshapiri males were found with 5 of the breakaway lionesses. We watched the 7 lions swim westwards across the Sand River before they started hunting zebra near our Airstrip.
