There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Very intriguing info on sudan lions. One would assume the lions in sudan would be closeley related to barbary but are not .

Or not as closely related as that lion in Gabon was to lions in Congo-Brazzaville, which Barnett et al. (https://link.springer.com/article/10.100...017-1039-2) noted was like the relationship between Amur and Caspian tigers, as in almost genetically identical, being different by 1 mutation, but apparently the relationship between Sudanese or Central African lions and Barbary lions is close enough that the CSG grouped them together as 1 subspecies, separate from Southeastern or Southern African lions, like it grouped all tigers (Pages 6668) in Mainland Asia (Amur-Caspian, Bengal, Malayan-Indochinese and South Chinese tigers) as 1 subspecies, distinct from the Sunda subspecies (of which the only known surviving population is the Sumatran tiger): https://repository.si.edu/bitstream/hand...sAllowed=y

Panthera leo leo Population is known or referred as "Northern Lion". My suggestion is to alter this thread name to that. IMO @BorneanTiger   Lol

Actually, a problem that I've highlighted earlier is that Southern lions (Panthera leo melanochaita) are also present in North-East or Central Africa, and that's why we have this thread, to make it clear that there are issues with the Cat Specialist Group's classification of lions in Central Africa as Panthera leo leo and those in East Africa (which includes Ethiopia) as Panthera leo melanochaita, and that's why there's a question mark on the map of lion subspecies in Page 72: https://repository.si.edu/bitstream/hand...sAllowed=y

About #18 post
Great in these days too, these probocideans are one of the important food source for Big cats like Tiger and Lion. It is fascinating to see a hunt. I can imagine how much the prehistoric felid monsters fed on these. Interesting...

I have also wondered if lions living in south sudans sudd wetlands are similar in size to botswana lions. Since they both live in similar habitat and have a large prey base.

The caption says that they are Abyssinian lions (and I wonder why the Romanian flag is shown?):
