A compiled History of the Matimba Coalition
PART 5 - Genetic legacy: the next generations

Matimba offspring sired before the coalition split (born between 2011-2012)
  • Nkuhuma Pride:
    - Junior Nkuhuma (2012-2020) formed the Orpen Coalition with an unrelated male (Buddy). Junior was very likely the father of Nzuri (born in Mbiri pride, last partner of Tintswalo Mandevu). Along with Buddy, Junior fathered Skorro Breakaway subadults including Skorro BA male, who was nomadic in SS around 2024.- 4 females born in 2012 (Chela, Purple Eye, Ridge Nose, Amber Eyes), the core of Nkuhma pride util 2024. Chela and RN’s sons (Matimba grandsons) are called “Nkuhuma males”, who are dominant in company of Mohawk avoca over Mantimahle pride females. Ridge Nose last son and daughter, sired by Plains Camp Males, are also grandchildrens of the Matimbas.
  • Mbiri Pride:
    - 2 Older Mbiri males born in 2011:  Senior Mbiri (2011-2023), part of Nsemani coalition with Rockfig male. Nsemani coalition had many cubs with Nsemani pride. The brother of Nsemani Mbiri was briefly in a coalition with the S8 Imbali male and was last seen east of Orpen in 2017.
  • Talamati Pride:
    - 2 females: 1 Matimba daughter (2012-2023) is said to be mother of 2 Msuthlu pride females. Therefore, Msuthlu cubs sired by Gijima males in Southern Sabi Sands are Matimba great-grandchildren.
    - 3 Talamati males (b. 2013) moved to Kruger: one was likely successful in southern KNP, seen in 2019 with one Mangheni male and two unrelated partners, and later in 2021 with two unrelated partners. The other two managed to stay in a territory around S21, but were chased shortly after, one of them was never seen again and the other one had a back limp, joined De Laporte coalition and disappeared in 2021.

Southern Matimba’s offspring
  • Torchwood pride: S. Matimbas mated with 4 original Torchwood females. 4 males and 4 females were born late early 2014, surviving subadults ended up forming a breakaway because of the birmingham males.
    - One Torchwood male (“Hairy Belly Junior”) formed a coalition with 2 Fourways males, being very succesful in Kruger around Leeupan area. Then they expanded to Mazithi pride leaving subadult offspring alive in 2025, after Torchwood male's demise in early 2024.
  • Styx Pride: No cubs or young lions reached adulthood.
  • Tsalala Pride: None of the eight cubs made it to adulthood
  • Othawa Pride: 1 female born in 2018, called Gingerella, is now in Ximhungwe pride with 2 healthy subadult daughters. She had two 2 littermates called “Mini Matimbas”. Both males later moved to KNP, to never be seen again.

Northern Matimba’s Offspring
  • Mbiri pride:
    - 2 Mbiri males born in 2013: The famous duo ZigZag (aka Scar) and Shaka, most likely sons of N. Matimbas. A third brother perished during nomadic period. This strong duo sired the coalition of six Mayambula/Vlak males in 2018, among many cubs in Mayambula, Skorro and Birmingham prides.
    - 2 Matimba daughters born in 2013, currently the oldest females of the Mbiri pride.
  • Skorro pride: 7 cubs were born in late 2014-2015 in the Skorro lion pride.
    - Two of them became the Skorro boys Sindzisa (2015-?) and Rhasa (2015-2023). Interestingly, Sindzisa and Rhasa were ousted from their natal pride by Junior Nkuhuma, their older half brother. Skorro males sired cubs in Western pride and 17 cubs with Mayambula pride. Rhasa was killed by two Vuyela males, after that, Sindzisa abandoned his territory and was never seen again.
  • Koppies pride: There are more likely adult Matimba daughters in this pride. Matimbas were dominant there from 2013 at least to middle 2015 when Avoca/Giraffe males fully took over Koppies pride. The Koppies had a tragic fate, as after disputes with the Mbiri pride, only one female and five cubs survived, but they later disappeared in Kruger.
    - One Koppies young male partnered with Red Road Male, in late 2018 they clashed with Avoca/Giraffes, Koppies male was not seen after that.

Excellent efforts, again, you have really been nailing these summarized posts lately, and they are extremely helpful for everyone, thank you!

An aside, I do miss the Koppies pride, so sad to witness their going down to one lioness and 5 cubs (not all, if any, were her own), and her leading the cubs into Kruger, never to be seen again. Everything that happened around that incident, and all of the lions involved, her sister being killed and eaten by the Mbiri Pride, then the pride being attacked by the Mbiri Pride again, and Junior helping to fend them off, just a terrible ending for all.

You are welcome! It is a pleasure to contribute to the appreciation of lions!
I had forgotten that Koppies incident with Mbiris... very raw and sad. I will add it to the summary.

Great post as usual.

I'd only add that the brother of Nsemani Mbiri was briefly in a coalition with the S8 Imbali male.

And the apparent fathers of the Leeubron males are the old Nsemani males that came before Mbiri and Rockfig.

Photographer says only 4 seen in the last months, no photo of Mayambula #4 in forever.

It's likely that they are down to only 4 brothers.

He is prob gone or disappeared in Kruger, last sighting was while ago (1 year or something like that).

Thank you! I will copy here my last post of the Matimba males thread adding this information.

Please let me know if you find anything wrong!

Nsemani coalition had many cubs with Nsemani pride and possibly sired Leeubron males (who could be Matimba grandsons). His brother, S8 partner, was last seen east of Orpen in 2017.
