Man Vs Lion Notes

I'm not sure if any of you are watching "big cat week"
But the first documentory was Man vs Lion with Boone Smith A couple of notes -Male and Female Lion were able to run 29 mph and the fastest the female got to was 31 but they said lions have even been recorded at 45mph in the wild, which I would doubt, seems a little fast to me. But maybe the right lion can do it. -Male Lion was able to pull with 1500lbs of force. -Lioness was able to swipe over a piece of meat the was 9' ft high with a estimation of 10ft at her peek. -Lion muscle fiber are twice as small as humans so they are able to pack much more into the same size of muscle as well as being much denser than humans. -Coalition of 3 males took down a juvenile hippo (about half the size of a adult female) with ease. I would estiimate Bigondada (largest of the 3 male coalition in S. Africa) at about 400lbs when compared to Boone. But Mohawk and blondie seem to be close in size to him, especially Mohawk. -Bigondada gets driven off the carcass by one of the brothers in the same night, where he intially claimed a female and drove the other brothers away from her. Strange to watch a hierarchy shift in a matter of moments. 
Yeah was good episode, was hoping they would try and test bite force on the lions. Was impressed that the male lion was only a few mph slower than the lioness, wonder how their wild brothers and sisters would have differed? Was funny when the guy was playing tug of war and got almost smashed into the side of the box.
Going to record upcoming shows, on lions and tigers, there are a good few, cannot recall all names, remember tiger revenge and a few others.
Game of lions is on, awesome already, huge 2 year old, narrator is the voice of scar.

You probably want to post the video in the Lion predation thread.
That lioness probably gets up around 12' to take down that sub adult Giraffe. I have no doubts a big cat can go higher than 10' if they have to. Big difference between hunting in the wild and calmly swiping at a little chunk of meat. 10' is only the height of a Basketball hoop, lions are roughly the same body length as average human beings, I'm sure a much more athletic cat is going to jump higher than a human being.
I like the Leopard doc.
Very interesting to see the Father Leopard laying back with his family and the interaction between cub and father. Which was not much and the father tolerated him but then left him and the family quickly. But obviously was with them for a little while. Also interesting to see the mother leopard turn on the daughter as soon as she was in heat for the first time. Its like a natural alarm clock to the mother that they are ready to leave. I was impressed that the very first kill the sub adult leopardess made was a sub adult Kudu which are large herbivores. I really enjoyed the Future Cat doc. Very cool to see the different planetary environments that could play out and how big cats would adapt and which big cats would be the most successful. Cant wait for Tigers Revenge tonight.
Yeah recording it, looks real good. Wonder what tigers will be in it, they are from ranthembore right? Dont think i spelled that correctly.
Ya, it looks to be revolved around a females first family.
I would guess its about one of Machli's daughters.
Alright, some notes on Tiger's Revenge
The story is about the life of T17 (the dominant daughter of Machli, the one who defeated her and took her territory). She was originally trying to have a family with the Star Male but after 2 years of unsuccessful attempts she ventures out of her territory to T25 (the famous male who had to raise his cubs on his own becuase the female died due to natural causes) and she begins to breed with him as well as back with the Star male in her old territory. She then begins to venture between the two territories, she comes across the T25 male again, but this time he is with his cubs, and this is where the famous video of him protecting his cubs is shot, he simply warns her that they are off limits and she gets the hint and goes back to her territory. The monsoon season hits and after it ends the photographer comes back to find out that she has successfully had cubs and is living in the furthest territory of the T25 male and its safe to assume the cubs are his. Her sister takes over her old territory once she has left. This is when drama begins, the Star male is searching for her and he finds her and her cubs and he is not happy. They have a fight since she is forced to protect them, the cubs scatter and she is severly injured in the fight. She searches for her cubs for 2 days until finally she finds them and knowing that its no longer safe to have them there because surely the Star Male will return to finish the job, she moves them towards villagers area and after that she is not seen for a month. The cubs are fed by the forrest guards and are still alive today, unfortunately she has not been seen in over a year and is presumed dead. Wether its from the injuries suffered during the fight or the villagers, the outcome is unknown. A side note, The T25 cubs are tranq'd and moved to another Tiger location that is suffering a low # of females. Very sad, but awesome doc. I highly recommend watching it when you get a chance.
A couple of brief right ups of the past two docs on big cat week
First one was Lion Gangland The story of C Boy after he was badly mauled by the killers and a pride living on the outskirts of the serengetti called the Vermundi Pride. It starts with the pride and their many cubs who are skinny during the dry season. It shows the pride grow, rains fall and the herds finally show up for the pride to become successful. Interesting notes I took from it -C-boy aligned with another male (hildor) to form a coalition and take over this pride (rare for a male to come back after being dethroned) -Pride attacks C-boy when he gets to snappy towards the cubs -The Killers make their way through the vermundi pride but don't go after C-boy and his friend this time due to the fact that the territory he controls is so poor in terms of prey and cover. (also probably the reason C-boy was able to regain a pride after a defeat) -Very cool to see the images taken from ground level by a remote camera and video. -Pictures and vids are the best I have ever seen Next doc is the Tiger Wars Story of B1 taking the throne from charger and the mother (forget her name of B1-daughter of charger and her raising the her cubs) Notes -B1 fought Charger (he was weak and old) and charger died eventually from the wounds which would not heal -B1 killed a cub of a different mother but never got to his mothers cubs, both of which survived) All I can remember now and I have been busy at work, Ill try to have more as it comes to me and I have more time. sounds interesting, I never knew they did a documentary on bina 1 and bina 2 (cubs of T25).. how unfortunate that T17 is not with us anymore and both the cubs of T25 are now in Sariska starting their new life as adult females.. [img]images/smilies/tongue.gif[/img] Thanks Pckts.
She was probably killed by the Dollar male after he jealously fought with her while she was trying to keep him from her cubs.
She was badly injured after the fight, and took two days of searching for her cubs. She knew they where not safe so she moved had to move them. You could see how injured she was and she moved them towards villagers. So the cause of death is unknown, but either way, its been over a year and they presume she is dead. No other reason a mother would just abandon her cubs like that and never be seen again. |
