Safari Update

Two day update

Another great couple of days in the bush and the sightings is definitely warming up the the winter cold!
With regards to the lion dynamics, nothing has changed. The 5 Mbiri females were quite unfortunate to lose their buffalo kill too the hungry Thanda Impi males, with all the commotion happening around Nyati drive/Catwalk west area. The females were relocated about a kilometre from the males on Lumpfaan rd stalking buffalo but all attempts were futile and the ladies had to spend the night with stomachs only half full. The sable bridge leopard cubs were found on Nyati drive aswel, but this time closer to vulture pan. Only one of the cubs presented themselves and was perched atop a termite mound. Late this morning the Nharu pride was found on Leadwood link finishing off a wildebeest kill,3 females and 10 cubs were present.

Epic two day safari update!

The 4 avoca males are back in town and by tonight, the dynamics may change! This time the Thanda Impis ability to hold territory and to protect cubs are really going to be put to the test. Wickus found the 4 avoca male lions on gps loop early this morning, and the Thanda Impi males were about 600m away mating with two of the Mbiri females(after finishing a Zebra kill) on back of lumpfaan. We had an amazing sighting of the Nharu pride with the cubs, which had killed a wildebeest on leadwood link, they moved toward S6 deep crossing and visual was lost. Wickus also found the sable bridge leopard cub on Tamboti rd.

The Mohlabetsi male now in his prime. The most dominant male of the Mohlabetsi coalition. Three lion prides are now to be found within their territory and the big question is if they will try and this expand even further?

Epic two day safari update!

The last couple of drives has been immense, but standing out from the rest, was the new hyena den! Ironically, the way we discovered it was dramatic and in fact, quite sad!
As the avoca male lions awoke, they looked South towards Thanda Impi territory. We all thought they were going to pursue the Mbiri lionesses that was, and still is mating with the two Thanda impi males. The mating lions were a about 600m away from the 4 intruders and we thought chaos will be imminent during the cold night! As the 4 massive male lions started moving south, a squealing yelp came from the opposite direction. There attention immediately turned around towards the North, from where they originally came from and went to inspect the commotion. We followed the lions until they found the newly discovered hyena den. Unfortunately one cub made it back to the hole to late and one of the avoca males ended the young life with a swift bite to the neck. The 4 male lions were nowhere to be found the next morning and presumably headed back to the southern Timbavati.

A sigh of relieve when the Thanda Impi male lions were found again with the Mbiri females at vulture pan unscathed. Aswel as the 10 Nharu cubs with their 3 bermingham (nharhu) mothers much further south towards malcolms bridge/ pivapath area where they also attended hunt school for the morning! The sable bridge leopard cub was also found high up in a jackal berry tree harassing a vulture nest at one stage! Both of the leopard cubs were around leopards drift area and the mother again, nowhere to be seen.

It's always a privilege to see large male lions basking in the glory of their huge manes! En route back to the game lodge after finishing off another successful game drive, we came across three of the males from the Mohlabetsi Pride. Interestingly enough, one of the females from the River Pride was hanging out with this powerful coalition! From cheetah to leopard and lions; the Balule is rife with big cat activity! http://www.ezulwini-billys-lodge.co.za | http://www.ezulwini-river-lodge.co.za

A dominant leader needs to find the perfect place to rest. The coalition of males from the Mohlabetsi Pride, together with the River Pride females made a kill. Jochen was lucky enough to photograph this golden haired beauty!

From Africa on foot
This morning our guests headed out on a game drive and arrived at this magnificent sighting of a Trilogy male lion feasting on a buffalo, while the Giraffe Pride busied themselves on a second carcass nearby! What a way to start the day on safari! Looking forward to heading out this afternoon to see whether the Giraffe Pride's white lionesses will be in view
*This image is copyright of its original author

This fantastic male lion we have come to know over the last few years has been a highlight of our lion sightings, and this morning's encounter of him and his brother alongside the Giraffe Pride was no less spectacular.

One very full belly showed us that the lions had spent a good few hours filling up on buffalo before spending the midday hours sleeping it off. We hope they will be in the same place this afternoon, giving us another opportunity to watch them.

Digging in! The Trilogy males took down the buffaloes with the Giraffe Pride on the main boundary road between the Klaserie and Timbavati Nature Reserves. They were comfortably hidden in the foliage, but we still had a good view of the feast that was taking place.

It's a good thing the lions took down more than one buffalo, as there might have been some fighting taking place between them if they only had the one carcass to share... They might hunt as a pride, but when it comes to eating, they prioritise themselves.

Trilogy male feasting in the dappled sunlight this morning - hopefully there is enough meat left on the carcasses to bring the lions back this afternoon and give us another look at them.

The Trilogy males and giraffe pride with the white lions made 2 buffalo kills this morning just off the main road. Always a highlight to see this large pride with the big males.
