Lions only regulary use small portions of their territory with some paths connecting these areas together. If they stray from those, they can roughly orient themselves around those spots to get an general sense of where they need to go. With perhaps some navigating around the sun or distant mountains to help them. It helps that the Savanna is very open so finding a big Kopje to lookout from also helps.

If they get seperated, its just a matter of checking those spots while leaving a mark you have just been there. Then if you are close, contact call. 

Nomads probably use a similar tactic, but on a much bigger scale and avoiding territorial markings from other coalitions. Though if they are seperated it can take a lot longer to find eachother, so even while fleeing their best tactic is to flee in the same direction or note which way the other went.
