There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Camera traps find elusive black panthers in abundance in north kanara

A black panther caught on a camera trap
“Camera traps with night vision facility have revealed a healthy, rising population of black panthers in these regions which have pristine continuous patches of forests. With less human interference and a human population of 30-40,000, leopards, including black panthers, are flourishing in these regions.”

BENGALURU:  Recent camera traps reveal a rise in the population of the elusive black panthers in Dandeli and Anshi forest regions of Uttara Kannada district. The last camera trap survey done in 2015 in the forest ranges of Kulgi, Phansoli, Gund and Anshi had shown a ‘good number’ of black panthers out of the total leopard captures in these areas. In fact, 14 per cent were found to be black panthers.
With the evergreen rich forest habitat supporting their survival, panthers can be seen on the outskirts of villages, forest fringes as well as on roads and highways criss-crossing this forest district. Karwar DCF told The New Indian Express, “Camera traps with night vision facility have revealed a healthy, rising population of black panthers in these regions which have pristine continuous patches of forests. With less human interference and a human population of 30-40,000, leopards, including black panthers, are flourishing in these regions.”
The DCF added, “Our night vision camera trappings have also revealed black panthers and leopards sharing a meal. Regular traps show the black panthers roaming in many areas as forests in this district stretch up to the sea and therefore support many wild species. We have so many black panthers in the Karwar area that now they are commonly sighted.
They may sometimes enter villages but can easily escape to the forest, as a result the conflict situation here is minimal.”The terrain and habitat is supportive for the survival of the melanistic leopards, said wildlife activist Giridhar Kulkarni.

TornEar-The Legendary Temple Male:

The mystery of the Temple Male got etched into memories of many as he emerged from the light mist, holding the center of the path as a model born to the catwalk. Shivers ran down my spine as his eyes bored into mine through the view finder of my camera. Adrenaline junkies are we guys who wait, anticipate, prepare for these moments which we capture and relive every time we scroll through our albums

A Story of Leopard and Cow which is stranger than a Fiction from Gujarat !!
Even tho the story is from 2003 we thought it would be nice to share it on @wildkarnataka as It was a rare case of predator-prey friendship. A leopard coming to ‘visit’ a cow at night literally became the talk of the town. The incredible ways of the two animals at Antoli village in Vadodara district attracted the attention of one and all, including the wild life activists. Local villagers were first to notice the frequent visits of a leopard to the sugarcane field for its close encounter with a cow in the field. Immediately they alerted the wildlife department. One team comprising wildlife warden Mr Rohit Vyas, conservator of forest H S Singh and other enthusiasts including wildlifer Manoj Thakkar and Kartik Upadhyay visited the village several times for verification and found that the leopard has been visiting the cow at regular intervals. Mr Vyas says, "It was unbelievable, they approached each other at
very close proximity and the fearless cow licked the leopard on its head and neck. The dogs would bark when the leopard came to meet the waiting cow every night between 9.30 PM to 10.30 PM". The Forest Department which was trying to capture the beast, gave up its efforts after learning about the friendship. Moreover, the leopard did not harm other animals or human beings in the area. Its visit benefited villagers as other animals who damage the crops were scared away. That year the village’s crop yields went up by 30 percent.

When it comes to choosing a cozy corner for an evening siesta, there's no looking back; even if it meant to break a branch or two. Referred to as Torn Ears by my friends, this male leopard latched on to one of his favourite trees waiting for the rains to stop.
The #D500 won't disappoint you with its focusing, provided you have chosen the right focus points and are quick in toggling them. I will share a different image & share my views on its noise performance on my next post. © 2016 Ramakrishnan Aiyaswamy

The Gems of the heaven called KABINI !!
.
Scarface shaped my destiny, Cleopatra and her first born showed me the importance of family and unity, it was Torn Ears who taught me never to back down and Monk’s endless journey that allowed me to transcend time. These cats were more than just animals and were more human than most people, each with strong individual characteristics that helped shape mine. They are the leopards of Kabini and their lives will forever hold the most important chapter in my book of life.
As seen and told by @shaazjung @thebisonkabini .

LOL

Picture from @Vinay.mb.9 - A hyperactive little ball of spots.. Every now and then this beautiful place Kabini gives us an experience that changes our lives. Recently I have been lucky enough to have a couple of these experiences and each one seems to be better than the last. .......nothing more to say..:) Managed this shot with just enough light left.!
