Did she succeed? Nothing more dangerous than a mother protecting her cub.

Edit: nvm I saw it, she did it. Drove off the lion and protected her cub, all were unharmed.

Amazing mother she is

was about to post the pictures of the female leopard protecting her cub as well, she's really brave and lucky!
but I have never seen a leopard getting this close to a lion. I think the leopards would have been more careful with a lioness, because the lionesses are quicker, and could have caught her. the terrain there helped as well.

I don't think it would of mattered, she was going to die for her cubs. Like the Puma fighting off the Grizzly, a mother cat/bear will die on their "shield" to protect their offspring.
Its a beautiful thing to watch... A mothers love is the most transferable thing when comparing us to them.

for a cat attacking a bear is not the same as fighting a bigger cat , for sure cat's will usually never die for the cubs they will take big risks to protect their cubs, but like you will never see a cheetah attacking a lion. attacking other types of animals is different. a feral cat attacking a lynx or cougar will never happen, but cat's will attack large dog and even like the caracal mother up against 3 hyenas, but if a leopard had appeared she would flee herself.

a leopard getting this close to a male lion is by far the most impressive thing I've ever seen a mother cat have done, if she had gone on the physically she would go into a sure death, a 40 kg female leopard against a 200 kg lion, it's madness and the leopards amazing agility added with her mother instinct saved the cub. a lioness would most likely have caught her.

From http://waliatkhan.trendyimageobsession.net/5325711-13774508:(In the link the pictures look better. In the last pics I don't think the sequence is correct, but anyway here it goes)

VERY angry Lion gives rival a beating after he tried to interrupt as he mated with a female

#1 It started when one of the male lions interrupted his opponent while he was mating with a female

#2 In an attempted display of dominance, the two predators then squared off in a battle for the female

*This image is copyright of its original author

#3 The two lions bare their teeth and claws as the fight erupts in Kruger National Park, South Africa

*This image is copyright of its original author

#4 Incredibly, the skirmish lasted a full 10 minutes - until the aggressor was beaten and retreated

*This image is copyright of its original author

#5 Both lions roared loudly during the fight, in a bid to determine who could take the female into their pride

*This image is copyright of its original author

#6 The fierce battle was witnessed by Pieter Meiring, a photographer from Port Elizabeth, South Africa

#7 In this photograph, one of the lions can be seen using his sharp claws to tear at his opponent's hide

#8 The two lions, roughly the same size, squared up in a fight over territory and dominance over nearby females

*This image is copyright of its original author

#9 Baring their fangs, the pair clash as the female at the centre of their attentions watches nearby

*This image is copyright of its original author

#10 The two lions attempt to bite each other as they kick up dust and dirt during the dramatic fight

*This image is copyright of its original author

#11 One of the lions manages to sink its teeth into its opponent's neck during the incredible fight

*This image is copyright of its original author

#12 Both the male and female that were interrupted by the intruder growl an roar before the fight begins

*This image is copyright of its original author

#13 After a few moments involving a tense stand off, the pair of lions launch at each other

*This image is copyright of its original author

#14 Here the winning lion is seek pinning down his opponent in what looks like victory

*This image is copyright of its original author

#15 The female lion starts to wander away from the fighting lions, both of which are competing for her attention

*This image is copyright of its original author

#16 Eventually, the intruding lion was defeated and their original pair picked up where they left off

*This image is copyright of its original author

Edit: I found the video of the fight. There isn't a proper audio of it, as they were far of it, but you can get a better sense of how males fight, the tactics they use and also how the fight is kept to a relatively low level, as to not cause much hurt towards the coalition mate.
It's a facebook video so, click on it.

Leadwood Private Camp Timbavati:
July 20th 2013
A fantastic sighting this week of the Jacaranda pride. Not only did they make a young hippo kill but they fought a single male lion(the Birmingham male, one of the fathers of the young Birmingham boys) from the klasserie that tried to take their kill away.
Even though the one male lion from the Klasserie was outnumbered by 4 males and 3 females he still tried to chase the pride away from their hippo kill. Eventually the males from the Jacaranda pride went after the single male and started to fight.
The single male was pushed down for a couple of minutes and eventually chased away.

Although from some years back, a great sighting.
And one that shows, once again, the importance of a coalition for the males, with the sub-adults of the pride, three of them with almost bare heads still, over powering an adult male that must have been dozens of kg heavier than them.

A video from a few years back, in 2012, that features a fight between brothers for mating rights, in the Masai Mara.
Enjoy.
