Dolphins are very smart, but showing gratitude is a nothing new amongst animals. 
Like the sea turtle who shows gratitude for having a fishing line removed, or the hump back who was rescued from the net then goes and shows off a bunch of breachs like it was celebrating.
Fox that had its head stuck in a jar etc...
Animals usually know when they are in need of help, the fact that they are associating humans with help has got to be a good sign. Hopefully other humans dont take advantage of it. 
Which has not been the case in the past.
