Beverly Joubert: " Today we celebrate fathers everywhere and the vital role they play in the lives of their families. Although elephant societies are matriarchal, the influence of experienced bulls is essential to a healthy herd. Younger males learn much of their behaviour from their elders, and in situations where mature bulls have been removed by poaching or legal hunting, herds are disrupted and youngsters can become excessively aggressive or fail to mate successfully as a result of a lack of guidance from older males. Without fathers around, elephant society is turned upside down.
