There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

I asked from the zoo about his weight. Veterinarian from there said, that Mohan was approximately 220 kg in his prime. He was weighed when he died, but I´m not sure if that 220 kg was based on earlier weighing or was it an educated estimation.

But I have to say, that when you write, that you estimate some weights, you are making just wild guesses, aren´t you? I mean, to what do you base your estimations in this thread for instance? We all know how impossible it´s to make estimations of weight from photos, you have made before mistakes like 50 kg more or less, that should make you more careful, imo. I don´t want to be mean, but I do find it really odd to see your estimations without any reasoning, to what and how you compare.

For instance when I see photo of Aslan and Mohan, I couldn´t say which one is heavier. I just know it because there is information available. Same thing with many other lions and tigers, some just look more robust than others, but when not side by side, no idea which one really is bigger, when looking different photos with lone tiger.

I estimate on the basis of visibility of ribs and pelvic girth.Sometime its very hard to estimate based on pictures due to angle variations

But you don´t know shoulder height, not body length or anything really. Making estimations like that are in reality just guesses and that was my point. We have seen from many estimations of yours and others, that it´s practically impossible to make good estimations from photos.

Only possible thing to say is, that if some individual looks robust or not. But as has been pointed out many times, more robust looking can be lighter if more slender looking is overall a lot bigger. For instance many body builders can look very big in photos, but when some are in reality 170 cm tall, they can look like weight would be 120 kg while in reality 90 kg, same time some tall person looking normal can be that 120 kg, while looking in photo something like 80-90 kg. I have seen tigers looking very big and robust and first thought is, that could be 250 kg... Then it´s told, that 180 kg.

I just want to point out, that almost all estimations, which have been possible to check, have been inaccurate and this doesn´t concern only you. When seeing some big tiger, I might write that "this looks like what a real 300 kg tiger might look like", but that doesn´t mean, that I would really think, that it´s 300 kg. It just looks robust and big in photo, but that´s all. I just assume, that 300 kg tiger would look robust, but then again who knows if we one day see a tiger with huge shoulder height and body length, looking like average in photo/video, when in reality the biggest there is Wink

So did I... which is why I chose them for comparison. Also because both are from German zoo.

Otherwise actual comperative size is hard to come by.
