Captive Lion and Tiger weights

(04-14-2020, 05:52 PM)Hello Wrote: How heavy is Jupiter @Amnon242 ?

He was 196 kg at the age of 4 (4 years 2 months). I dont know his prime weight.

But for comparison Igor was 180 kg when 2,5 yo, 220 kg at 5 and 240 kg at the age of 7. So...

I saw Jupiter in 2012 and 13. I remember him to be of medium body frame (but medium amur tiger is impressive animal). He had lean body. On the other hand Skip was bear-like. So when I saw that photo I thought that its Skip, because I dont remember Jupiter to be that massive. But yes, its Jupiter, almost certainly. He obvuiously gained a lot of weight.

Unfortunately amur tigers are not in that zoo anymore. Thay canceled this program, becuase the breeding conditions were not ideal for tigres. So the tigers were removed to different zoos in Europe.

Interesting. My estimate was exactly the same.

But...at second sight 200 kg, perhaps even less. He looks hefty, but at closer look it seems that he is at most of average size. No, no..this tiger is not over 220 kg. Anyway estimates like that are just a game, nothing to be taken seriously...:-)

But maybe I asked the wrong "question". I should have asked this question: what is the weight of that girl? :-)

Info on weight of a tiger from Tiger Oasis.

http://www.chovzvirat.cz/clanek/293-oaza-sibirskych-tygru/

...nejtěžší tygr p. Iršové váží 420 kg a když jsem stála vedle něho, neměla jsem pocit, že by byl tlustý - byl to prostě jen pořádný a dobře stavěný" kousek".

...heaviest tiger of mrs. Irsova weighs 420 kg and when I stood next to him, I didnt have an impression that he was fat - it was just a massive and well built "piece".

(Mrs. Irsova is the owner of Tiger Oasis)

Unconfirmed, but...well, its an information, everybody is free to opinion...

My opinion is that the one who wrote it, simply remembered wrongly what the owner told her. She told her 320 kg. I have similar experience with one breeeder. He told me that his amur was 340 kg when he came to the zoo (he was at his prime then). What I saw was a classical amur - 220 kg. I told him "you mean 240 kg". He insisted that he was 340 kg. When we met next time, he told me that I was right.

Another thing is that the visitor is Czech and the owner is Slovak. These languages are similar and mutually intelligible, but still one can easily mishear/misunderstand the exact figure. Very probably it was "X hundered twenty" The question is what is X. 2 is too low for heaviest amur from TO. 4 is simply too much. 3 is a lot, but not impossible. Another question is whether the tiger has been weighted or just estimated. Well....X20 kg is obviously a rounded figure, but it seems to be based on weighing...estimated figure would be probably something like X00 or X50.

320 kg for non obese tiger is certainly an extreme and there are reasons to doubt this figure...but on the other hand we have seen the photos from Tiger Oasis...

So I got in contact with Odense Zoo in Denmark about their tiger named "Igor", and it turns out he was weighed. However, unfortunately they said they didn't weigh him during his prime. They weighed him at the time of his death, which was after he already had lost weight due to an injury

He weighed 230 kilograms (At the time of his death). They said that the 250-300 kg weight in those reports shown earlier are his estimated weight during his prime.

The lion in this video from BJWT weighted 244 kg or 540lbs, he didn't specify which lion in particular it was but it's not Han as he weights 240kg.

That's Han aka Hanito, according to the post he weigh 528 lbs. He looked overweight though, because of his average frame.

If I'm not mistaken that's Illanga, Han's brother. He weigh 540 lbs? Now, he is the heavier lion compared to Hanito.

Yes, I said in the post above that Han weighted 240kg. He doesn't look overweight at all, just properly fed.

Gorakhito, MIKI and Ali are Kruger lions, so there is no wonder why they have much bigger frame than all the other lions there.
