Captures, Sizes and Measurements.

MALES

Big male Skull length and Report of an alleged 6.4 meters long specimen found in Ecuador.

From the book ''CROCODILES OF THE WORLD'' BY COLIN STEVENSON.

https://www.nhbs.com/crocodiles-of-the-world-book

''A large Black Caiman Skull is held in Florida State Museum in Gainesville. The skull measures 58.8 cm (23.1 in) in length, equating to a caiman of approximately 4.84m (15.9 ft) total length. A report from 1957 of a Black Caiman of 6.4 m (21 ft) in Ecuador seems exaggerated and no evidence remains of this individual. However it seems clear that the species can attain giant sizes.''

I managed to get the information of a 5.20 meters long tank captured in Mamirauá.

A few months back I had a conversation about amazonic jaguars with Wedzzy del Toro who works in Mamirauá reserve along with Jaguar researcher Emiliano Ramalho and I took advantage to ask her about the sizes of Black Caimans captured in that area and she told me about one of 5,20m long.

''I know about a caiman (black caiman) in Mamirauá that was captured measureing 5.20m, and weighing approximately 300 kg. Maybe there are more registers of larger animals in literature.''

Right bellow on the continuation it was about jaguars she said she doesn't recall the weight of Zangado male (which I asked her) and she told me the average sizes of amazonic males and females from Mamirauá reserve but its not the topic here.

Specimens captured by the Brazilian Black Caiman Expert Ronis da Silveira ( DA SILVEIRA ) in 2000.

''The researcher Ronis da Silveira captures another black caiman with steel cable. Data collected in his researches which made him capture more than 3,000 caimans, it indicates the possibility of management with exploitation of the species in 15 of the 620 lakes in the focal area of the project Mamirau - (RDS Sustainable Development Reserve) Mamirauá, Tefé, Amazonas, Brazil. Unfortunately I didn't find info on their sizes.

Around 4,5m long wild male captured in bad shape.

http://g1.globo.com/am/amazonas/noticia/...anaus.html
Year: 2012

''One black caiman of approximately 4.5 m long was captured by the Fire Department on the morning of Tuesday (20) at Porto do Ceasa, East Zone of Manaus. According to the State Super intendence of Navigation, Ports and Waterways (SNPH), the animal was found 75 meters from the waterfront by a flying pilot who tied it up and activated the firefighters.

Inpa veterinarian Anselmo Fonseca told G1 that the Caiman will be taken to the Institute's artificial lake. "We should stay with him, but I believe that other places that shelters animals like the Cigs are also of interest. At first we're going to keep it in an enclosed space here at the headquarters" he revealed.

According to Inpa's veterinarian, the animal is a male of the alligator species. "He is approximately 50 years old and between 250 and 300 kg" he said. He is fine, but a looking a little thin. Now we have to let him go, because an animal like that must be stressed and can go into shock because of the heat" he added.

One of those responsible for capturing the black caiman, Captain Hellinton Silva from the Firemen Department he pointed out that such occurrences are common in Porto do Ceasa. "It's normal to find animals there but this size is more difficult" he said.''

''Photos taken in 2005, during the handling of this ''small child'', a Black Caiman (Melanosuchus Niger) of almost 5 meters in length and about 550 kg. It was such hard work to get this guy off the ground! Work in team is fundamental to carry out a safe procedure, both for the maintenance of the physical integrity of the team and especially of the animal!''

5 meters long Wild specimen with around 500 kg found dead in Jaru River. Brazil.

https://www.newsrondonia.com.br/noticia/...oi-abatido

June 14th 2019

''It is unclear when the record was made, but the propagation of the images occured on Thursday (13th), in the pics it appears a giant dead Black Caiman on the banks of the Jaru River and people standing beside it.

The size of the animal is impressive, it is believed to be about 5 meters long and approximately 500 kg in weight.

The Black Caiman's body was found on a property used by a city building materials company to extract sand.

Some people reported that the reptile was well known in the region of line 608, near the Jaru River, where everyone called it the "Caiman of 08", the animal was often seen in that vicinity and there was a certain harmony between him and the people who attend the place.

The images began to be shared with the information that the Caiman had died of natural causes, but soon the case took another version, in the photographs analysis people said there were head injuries and blood trace in the animal's mouth, leading it to believe that the reptile was shot dead.
The delay in publishing the images was also attributed to a possible attempt to omit the environmental crime.''

5 meters + male and around 400 kg male found dead.

''A Black Caiman of almost 6 meters was found dead on the banks of the Jamari River near the BR 421 bridge in Ariquemes. The animal was floating on its belly and was seen by fishermen during the morning of this Saturday (21).
The Fire Department was called and found that the caiman was dead. The firemen rescued the animal and took it to the courtyard of the City Hall's Office of Works.''

THE RESCUE.

The rescue operation lasted about two hours, this animal must weigh about 400 kg, ''It took the strength'' of more than ten men - said Fireman Sergeant Dalla Costa.

- During last night this black caiman was very uneasy beating itself here, several neighbors saw it, probably this animal was hurt in the region of the works of the plant at the brushed waterfall, he is blind in one eye, several fishermen have seen this caiman in a well of the brushed waterfall - said Antonio, a resident near the river.

The black caiman had a head injury, probably caused by a gunshot. The black caiman's enormous size attracted hundreds of curious people and the traffic over the bridge stopped for a few minutes, the Military Police were there and released the traffic.

4,15 meters long male beast.

https://www.agron.com.br/publicacoes/not...anaus.html

Vets examine Black Caiman over 4m captured in Manaus - Brazil.

''Capturing the animal for the tests was not easy at all. Even the females with less than 3 meters long represent danger during the handling. The tactic is to trap the animal by the neck.

The vets want to know if he is able to return to nature.

The capture of two females was just a test. Veterinarians and biologists want to examine even the Black Caiman over 4 meters long. It was captured in the Porto do Manaus a week ago and taken to a nursery of the National Institute of Amazon Research.

The biologist of the Federal University of Amazonas, Ronis da Silveira has experience in the management of Black Caimans. Even so, he needs a lot of help. Six men were needed for the management, 230 kilos and 4.15 meters long.

The examination showed that the Black Caiman lost the left eye but still has conditions to return to nature.
Despite the good conditions the researchers still haven't decided when it will be able to return to nature.

The Black Caimans can reach 6 meters long.''

Health check up Management for Wally, a 4.12 meters long and over 40 years old male Captive Black Caiman from Brazilian Zoo.
credits: Wild Vets

part 1  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTAORMP7a1E

part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vrA8uqwPcQ

NOTE: I am gonna summarize Rodrigo Rabello who is a massive reptile fan and who also worked on a course in Africa capturing wild animals such as Eland, Elephant, Giraffe, Rhinos, Cheetahs.... his serious security warning to the team on the management process of such a large reptile and when he mentions about the man from IBAMA who got his neck broken by a black caiman tail slap/swipe.

Rodrigo Rabello -  ''Black Caiman is an animals people normally freak out and get too frightened to manage it but obviously within all the security control which is the main thing nothing wrong shall happen, With the animal outside of the water means its our chance of getting him but if he gets into the water it will be much harder so we gotta approach him cautiously with a very reduced number of people, we'll try to lace the animal out of the water hopefully everything will be alright and may he stay still so the lace/loop will be correctly done and once we pass the lace we're gonna need a team a bit more further away so when we pass the lace and put on the pressure on him he tend to get on other, they do what we call the tug war so he will get further away gripping on the steel cable starting to spin around, all those normal reactions  of a Crocodilian but he's got around 5 meters so we won't have enough strength to hold and in this moment I am gonna need you guys, you'll easily identify the moment we tighten  the lace and the fight/struggle will start and you guys will rush there to help us hold on the steel cable and keep the animal out of the water which only me and him vs this 5 meter long animal we have no chance at all so stay tuned and alert we'll hold the steel cable on a secure position so becareful with it, always keep the steel cable behind the animal never to the sides and much less to the front so we'll form a queue and will all pull together. We'll probably anchor this animal and drag it to a safe corner, tie it up so it won't escape so the rest of the team can approach so we'll start the whole procedure we'll jump on top of it, shut its mouth, pull its 4 limbs to the back and the Black Caimans use its tail, this animals utilizes its tail with alot of dexterity what I mean by that is it will easily throw its tail into your face and getting a tail smack/swipe from an animal this size... For those who knows Tiago from IBAMA knows what happened, he broke his neck by a Caiman's tail slap/swipe so we gotta be careful all the time, with this animal you can't blink, don't neglect in no moment if you get close to it even if he's completely tied up he yet can bruise a person, if he brutally shakes to the sides and if its head hits your leg it will break your leg. He is a dinossaur his head is like an anvil its extremelly hard and durable so don't make any mistake.''

*This image is copyright of its original author

During Wild Vets team hard work of moving Wally out of the water, He ended up tearing apart the steel cable.

After many attempts they try to capture him 4 times with the lace and didn't work, they even makeshifted the steel cable that day but it did not work either and the team after all the tirering attempts and even getting into the risk of trying to lace Wally in the water and also everybody being attacked by a swarm of bees in the process, they decided to leave him alone to not stress him too much and capture him the next day.

The Beast strength.

*This image is copyright of its original author

On the Following Day...

Now they got a locking system done to the steel cable in order to get Wally out of the water and with more people to help.
They tried to lace the reptile on the head, on the mouth, on the tail and another one at same time but Wally is yet destroying all steel cables they throw on him.

After so many effort done, headaches and after Wally destroyed so many more steel cables he was Finally captured and dragged out of the water.

Wally's health is fine and also don't forget that lengthwise Wally is ''only'' around an average sized male for Black Caimans as their average length being 4 meters long for males as mentioned by (Vasquez, 1991). Just imagine how much more trouble it would be for their capture if it was a 5.5 m to 6 m long specimen.

Wildwise unfortunately due to massive hunting, The local people interest on its meat and even by the the management procedure without reducing the population size (in numbers), its clear that most of the times the big looking ones (in size) will be slaughtered for their meat for commercial local consumption and also the massive hunting in order to use their meat as bait to capture other species such as Piracatinga and many other reasons its a bit difficult to find many of those 5.5m-6m large sized individuals in nature. But I think in the isolated areas of the Amazon away from humans is where the true Dinossaurs live.

Crews of a small boat were surprised by dozens of black caimans, every action was filmed and shared in social networks.

https://portaldacapitalam.com.br/cidades...eja-video/

''The video that caught the attention this Thursday (4), when showing countless black caimans, gathered in a muddy river, it is not known where the video was made but it was reported by the author of the images as  “Lago dos Patos” ( Duck's Lake ).

According to the video, the black caimans (Melanosuchus niger) appear gathered in two large groups in the river and become agitated with the presence of people. They move abruptly and in some moments try to reach the boat.

Jacaré-açu

According to biologist and caiman expert Ronis da Silveira, from the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) said scenes like this are common at this time of year in the Solimões-Madeira interfluge.

According to the expert, the reptiles are probably all males, with this being an area of "destiny" within the source-sumidouro theory. Ronis da Silveira said that with the drought caimans are forced to be aggregated themselves. "These high densities occur for 30 to 60 days a year. In general its not like that. This aggregate of animals originates from an immense area, which every year dries to different degrees.''

VIDEO.
