For so large and cumbersome an animal, black bears are excellent climbers.

Park euthanizes bear believed responsible for attack on hiker. Officials at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have euthanized a black bear they believe bit a sleeping Appalachian Trail hiker last week. Park wildlife technicians shot the bear with a tranquilizer dart Friday, three days after a 49-year-old Las Vegas man was bitten on the leg while he was sleeping in a tent near the Spence Field shelter. The victim was able to scare the bear away. Park Superintendent Cassius Cash consulted with officials and decided to euthanize the tranquilized bear. This male bear rested for about 30 minutes in the water before he disappeared into the forest as darkness fell.  *This image is copyright of its original author This large male walked out of the forest yesterday with visible scaring on both sides of this muzzle. I was watching this male bear soak in the swamp this morning when I noticed him dip his head under water to about eye level. I knew the "spin cycle" would be next so I quickly dropped down and prepared for this shot. With the temps in the low 80's the bears have been feeling the need to cool their body temps down and this swamp has been the ideal place for them to relax and recharge. Credits to Chris Norcott.

THIS IS THE BIGGEST BLACK BEAR FROM PENNSYLVANIA YOU’VE EVER SEEN: All photos via Facebook/Hunting Pennsylvania Apparently they grow them big in the great state of Pennsylvania; black bears that is. The boar in these pictures either stopped gladly to get his photo taken, or he’s so big that he can’t even move! This big boy is starting to get famous as the “bear that isn’t real”, but these pictures are pretty good and you’re going to start to believe.  *This image is copyright of its original author His belly hangs so low that you can’t even see the ground under him!  *This image is copyright of its original author There’s no question that this is a big boar, and it’s pretty obvious by the new green growth behind him that these are spring-of-the-year photos.  *This image is copyright of its original author Since sows emerge with their cubs in the spring (if they successfully bred) and generally aren’t nearly as big as their male counterparts, this is one of the biggest male black bears ever to be photographed in Pennsylvania. They haven’t come right out and said where this is yet, but big black bears have been taken in the past in PA, like the 704-pounder just a few years ago and this one looks just as big; maybe bigger! I can only imagine the power this boy might have. Amazing animal.
If the pictures taken on post #26 are Springtime photos, then my guess is that this big bear knows where the best dumpsters are and the right times to visit them.
