That's an uncommon injury for a lion however not that an uncommon injury amongst their erstwhile rivals, hyenas. Very unlikely another lion causes that injury, even in a feeding frenzy on a carcass and there is no way in my mind a hunting incident causes that type of wound.

There is no way to be absolutely certain but to me that's a wound with all the characteristics of a confrontation with a hyena clan. Luckily the jaw seems to be intact as well as the nasal cavity and for all it's goriness, once healed will probably allow normal activity. I've also seen another pic this morning where it doesn't look quite as ragged. If infection can be avoided, I think the cub will make it. Reply
