Yea, nasty injury, for adult lion this is survivable, for a cub/small sub its 50-50 i guess. Yes, it was prob tug of war situation, she was prob feeding, then bigger lion came in and bited the meal, but accidently that bite caught her cheek too, and when bigger lion pulled away to claim the meal, it ripped her cheek.. 
I doubt it. It takes a lot of force to rip flesh and skin like this and it seems bone might be damaged aswell. This is not something you just do accidentally or even intentionally as a lion or we would see a lot worse after fights.
Its more likely this was a hunt gone wrong. Perhaps a warthog or something.

That's an uncommon injury for a lion however not that an uncommon injury amongst their erstwhile rivals, hyenas. Very unlikely another lion causes that injury, even in a feeding frenzy on a carcass and there is no way in my mind a hunting incident causes that type of wound.
There is no way to be absolutely certain but to me that's a wound with all the characteristics of a confrontation with a hyena clan. Luckily the jaw seems to be intact as well as the nasal cavity and for all it's goriness, once healed will probably allow normal activity. I've also seen another pic this morning where it doesn't look quite as ragged. If infection can be avoided, I think the cub will make it.

It doesnt look as bad as on initial photo, looks like only skin/lip is teared, no deeper damage. I think she will be fine (if no infection), and if she makes to adulthood, will look like absolute badass. Following lions as close as I have these last several years does take a toll on our emotions.
I know that by now I should know better than to get overly attached. To have restraint over allowing myself to be affected by the changing dynamics and by what almost inevitably are some very tragic occurrences in a lions life. Despite knowing better, I’m totally guilty of getting too attached. Of letting it affect me stronger and stronger. It’s a reason I’ve taken a significant step back. Distancing myself a bit from the day to day. Seeing this marvel of nature suffer this is hard. I do hope she can overcome and show us the fighter she is and will become. |
