Hi Sanjay,

Do you know how they confirmed it as Bengal tiger cubs ?
Is it Bengal tiger cubs sent from India or from any captivity to Thailand or is it Indochinese tiger cubs from Thailand ?

Leopard Caught After 16 Hours

*This image is copyright of its original author

After toiling hard for 16 long hours, forest officials managed to trap a leopard, that had entered into a house in Dungripali village on Tuesday. The animal strayed into the village on Tuesday morning and attacked Snehalata Satnami (55) and his son Ajit (26) while they were sitting in front of their house.

However, as Snehalata resisted, the leopard ran into a room following which she bolted the door from outside. Officials of Bargarh and Sambalpur forest division and Hirakud wildlife division led by DFO Ajay Kumar Jena rushed to the spot and launched an operation to trap the leopard.

The officials first tried to catch the animal by putting a cage in front of the door which proved futile. Later, a net was put in place and the animal was intimidated with fire. In its attempt to escape, the leopard entered into the cage.

Two abandoned tiger cubs killed in Madhya Pradesh

In a major setback for Madhya Pradesh two tiger cubs got killed after being abandoned by their mother in Panna Tiger Reserve (PTR).

These cubs were first litter of hand-bred tigress T5 and were born three weeks ago.

This incident is being considered as a big disappointment for PTR that had lost all its tigers in early 2009.

"With the death of these two cubs we are left with 26 tigers, which include four sub-adults on dispersal mode," PTR's field director R S Murthy told TOI.

Abandoning cubs is a commonly reported behaviour among big cats, he said. "Our team could find only a few remains of the cubs. Samples have been preserved for forensic examination," said the officer.

T5 was last seen around its cubs on May 20. On May 21 it went out for a kill but did not return. It was spotted again after a week with tiger (T3) 500 meters away from the den.

It is one of the two tigresses born at Kanha National Park (KNP) in May 2006 and within days their mother had died. These two tigresses (T4 and T5) were semi-wild ones and had spent most of her time in KNP inside an enclosure after being orphaned.

In November 2011, T4 had become the world's first hand-bred feline shifted to the wild, to spawn two cubs. T4 and T5 were then reared in an enclosure and fed by KNP. The semi-wild tigress was carted out to Panna and released into the wild in March 2011. Both settled well.

Meanwhile, two tigers have dispersed from PTR in the last three months.

First one was P212. This radio-collared tiger, which shot into limelight after being bitten by rabid dog, was tranquilised and shifted to Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Siddhi district.

It was caught while heading towards Bandhavgarh tiger reserve discovering a thin corridor around the Ken River which was destroyed by human habitation in the last 60 years. Forest officials believe there were three tigresses at Sanjay Gandhi National Park and P212 would help in increasing the tiger population.

Similarly, tiger PTR's P121 has been caught in the camera trap in Damoh district. Its last picture was shot on June 8.

In early 2009, PTR had lost all its tigers and the big cats were subsequently reintroduced to revive their population.

When the relocation programme began in 2009, wildlife experts across the world doubted its success. Of the founder population, four were females —T1, T2, T4, T5 and a male T3. Nine of their cubs are males and two females. Two males from the first litter of T1 have already established their territories in the park.

Similipal Tiger Reserve zeroes in on sites for strayed tiger

The Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) authorities have zeroed in on two sites in the habitat to release a Royal Bengal Tiger that is currently housed at Nandankanan.

The STR authorities have sent the details to the state government. Since the tiger is likely to be released in the wild with a radio collar, the sites are under active consideration of the government.

"I will discuss the tiger's shifting with the forest secretary and principal chief conservator of forests in a day or two. I will go through the progress made by my predecessor in this regard," said forest and environment minister Bikram Arukh.

The two sites selected by STR are Nawana (north) range and Chahala range. "We have selected the two sites in view of the density of prey population. Also, these two sites are free from human interference. There are many water bodies and density of the forest is standard," said STR field director Anup Nayak.

Either of the two places will be suitable for the big cat to sustain itself, he added. "Once the government decides on the site, we will train three forest staffers for the tiger's post-release monitoring," he said.

Officials in wildlife wing said a team of scientists from Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, would come to Bhubaneswar to take a final call on the shifting. They will bring radio collar with them.

The tiger had strayed into the zoo on April 30 last year. But it fled the zoo, scaling the enclosure fence after 10 days only to come back after three weeks. Read more at:

Gotcha! Indian woman builds homemade trap and finally gets the better of leopard that killed 20 of her cattle in three months

Leopard kept attacking cattle at Baijanti Gogoi's farm in an Indian village.
Officials refused to do anything to stop the attacks and capture animal.
She decided to make her own homemade trap to try and catch the leopard.
Finally managed to trap the leopard in device made from household items

An Indian farmer who was fed up with a leopard attacking her cattle got the better of the creature by setting a homemade trap and capturing the animal.

Baijanti Gogoi of Torajan Betoni village had seen her livestock attacked constantly over the past three months with 20 of her animals preyed upon and killed by the creature.

She complained constantly to forestry officials in Choraipung but her pleas to capture the animal fell on deaf ears.

Ms Gogoi then decided to take matters into her own hands and come up with her own plan to capture the leopard.

She then fashioned a cat trap using items from her around her house which managed to lure and trap the leopard.

Locals in the village are now praising the farmer's bravery, which has not only saved the lives of the remaining animals on her farm but the lives of local people too.
