The book by Yuri Dunishenko and Sergei Aramilev, The Amur Tiger: The Uncrowned Lord of the Taiga, published by the Amur Tiger Center, is intended to acquaint a wide range of readers with the Amur tiger and the peculiarities of its life, as well as with the efforts that are being made to preserve it in the wild. The book was written by people who have been dealing with "tiger problems" for several years, and immerses the reader in the world of the Amur tiger and everything that surrounds it, telling about a rare predator in a simple but scientifically accurate language.
The book acquaints the reader with an amazing rare predator that lives on the territory of Russia. The reader will find in it information about where and how the tiger lives, which provides this representative of the southern fauna with the success of survival in the harsh Russian winter and how he found himself in such conditions. Much attention is paid to the disclosure of the way of life of the "uncrowned lord of the taiga", his relationship with other animals, and, of course, man.
The book also reveals the measures taken by the state and caring organizations to preserve the tiger in Russia, to ensure its conflict-free and harmonious coexistence with people. The book was illustrated by the best pictures taken by professional photographers and automatic cameras, as well as drawings by the illustrator Diana Makarova.
“This book was conceived with the aim of telling people about a unique animal, which, without a doubt, the Amur tiger is, without embellishment, based on objective information. I wanted to "arm" those who are engaged in conservation or "sympathize" with these activities with knowledge, and to prove to opponents who question the need to preserve the tiger population that we simply have no other way. Whether it succeeded or not - people will appreciate it and time will tell, ”says Yuri Dunishenko, author of the book The Amur Tiger: The Uncrowned Lord of the Taiga.
The language of the presentation of the material chosen by the authors is distinguished by simplicity and frankness, replete with facts from many years of observations of the predator and personal experience, but at the same time, scientifically accurate and reliable.
According to Sergey Aramilev, General Director of the Amur Tiger Center, co-author of the book, the publication was conceived with the aim of creating a work where it is accessible and interesting, but at the same time accurately and authentically, all relevant information about the Amur tiger, as well as best practices to preserve the population of a rare predator in Russia.
“Whether it succeeded is not for us to judge, it is the personal right of each individual reader. For me personally, working on this book in a team with Yuri Mifodievich Dunishenko is a serious school, thanks to which I have become more professional, " notes Sergey Aramilev. - Yuri Mifodievich is a “field worker” since birth, and even now, at an already venerable age, he prefers to spend his free time in the forest. He is the custodian of a huge amount of unique knowledge, which he always shares in personal meetings, but until recently this extremely valuable information was available only to a narrow circle of Yuri Mifodievich's listeners. Now, with the release of the book, the opportunity to become a listener of his lecture on the tiger, without visiting Khabarovsk or Vladivostok, has opened up for everyone who is interested. Despite the fact that Yuri Mifodievich is already an accomplished writer, he did not have a separate full-fledged book about the Amur tiger. Now there is, and that's great. “In addition to the fact that this book is superbly written and will be interesting, and, most importantly, understandable for both an adult and a schoolchild, it contains a lot of very interesting information about the tiger, previously known, for the most part, to people who study the tiger and others large cats. Undoubtedly, this work will have a positive impact on the popularization of the image of the tiger and the cause of nature conservation, for which many thanks to the authors, " said Mikhail Tiunov.

For his contribution to the preservation of the rare predator, he was awarded the Order of Honor and the Certificate of Honor of the President of Russia. Very interesting book. Looks like that nothing new for people who are interested what comes to interactions between "two kings", brown bears and tigers up north, but looks to be a very good book to make Amur tigers better known for people in interesting way. Hopefully a version in English is translated soon. This kind of books are very good because vast majority of people aren´t too keen to read scientific studies.

To date, all I know about the killed tiger is its approximate age and that it was probably not killed in 2020.

Viktor Lukarevsky, one of the largest experts on big wild cats in Russia, examined the habitats of tigers on the territory of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Zapovednoye Priamurye in the Khabarovsk Territory. According to the news agency "Khabarovsk Territory Today", in the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Reserve, he is trying to trace the history of the emergence of this isolated population of striped predators.
Recall that a few years ago, after a long break, tigers reappeared on Bolshoi Khekhtsir. A female named Zlata has already twice brought offspring from a male Odyr. Viktor Lukarevsky, Ph.D. in Biology, came to the Far East on his vacation to assess the prospects of this family of tigers, whether they can feed on this territory. Although the specialist called the conditions in the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Reserve favorable for the Red Book predators, he is generally skeptical about the official data on the state of the Amur tiger in Russia. This summer, the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia reported that the population of this rare animal in the Far East has reached 580 individuals, although 15 years ago it barely reached half a thousand.
- I believe that the official number of tigers in Russia is overstated. I came to such conclusions after analyzing the results of my surveys of tiger habitats. We have five stable groups in Primorye. On the territory of the Khabarovsk Territory, this is primarily the Anyui National Park, an emerging group on the territory of the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Reserve. And also there is a group of tigers that live outside the specially protected natural areas between the Khor and Bikin rivers. So, if the number of tigers is monitored on the territory of protected areas, its accuracy reaches 90% using these camera traps. But outside reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, we have very rough information about the number of these Red Book animals, - said Viktor Lukarevsky. - I conducted spot surveys in areas outside of the protected areas using proven methods, with the help of local colleagues. I came to the conclusion that the 400 tigers outside the protected areas, which are mentioned in the official reports, they simply have nowhere to come from. I estimate the maximum number of tigers in Russia at 300 individuals, including those who live in protected areas.
In the spring of this year, the agency wrote about the preliminary findings of the annual monitoring of the number of tigers. In the Khabarovsk Territory, on lands outside the reserves, they are counted by traces on model sites on the Khor and Matai rivers. The specialist Alexander Batalov, engaged in this, already then missed several "well-known individuals."
- Now a very serious problem is hanging over the tigers - African swine fever (ASF). This disease mows wild boars, and this is the main food for tigers. I am very afraid that this winter, in places where ASF is spread, we may lose almost all tigresses with their cubs. Either females who cannot feed the kittens will abandon them, or they will be forced to go out to settlements to hunt dogs, the expert added.
To cope with this disaster, the expert proposes a temporary moratorium on hunting for all types of ungulates. This will provide an opportunity to restore the numbers of roe deer and red deer, which are an alternative source of food for tigers to wild boars, without additional pressure from humans.
