Cristalino Lodge, Brazil
With records in five different points since last May, the territory of "Tupã", this male Jaguar nicknamed by @rafa.ferraz_bio and me, becomes clearer.

Has the Jaguar king (Brutus) been dethroned, A new male I’m calling (Titan) is now occupying the core of the older males home range. I have documented Brutus here for 3 years, the new king has different markings and appears to be a bit younger. This male makes our 9th individual Jaguar found in Sani. That number indicates a healthy Jaguar population within Sani Isla, let’s hope this trend continues in their parcel of Amazon rainforest. By visiting @sanilodgeoficial - which is an absolutely amazing jungle experience, you are directly protecting valuable rainforest along with animals like the Jaguar (Panthera onca).

To access the data compilation on recent jaguar weights for multiple populations please refer to the tabs below on this spreadsheet which I shared with you before. There you will find the compilation for Amazonian jaguars and other ecotypes. These data are updated consistently: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...zD8SM/edit

Keep in mind that we only have data on jaguars in the region of Mamiraua where jaguars are dwarfed due to small prey availability, therefore it is not indicative of the Amazon as a whole where jaguar sizes vary greatly depending on numerous factors.

We also have these data from Hoogesteijn and Mondolfi (1996) which covered areas of the Amazon around the peripheries of the rainforest where jaguars tend to be larger than those from the interior, the average was 84 kg but no range was provided. I know one male from the Venezuelan Amazon mentioned by Dr. Hoogesteijn in his book "El Tigre Americano" weighed 98 kg, this is probably the highest value we have so far recorded for a jaguar from the Amazon.

@Balam Check out this footage of a brief interaction between a jaguar and a black caiman in the Peruvian Amazon, Manu NP
This jaguar appears to be a young adult female or even a sub adult

credits to a friend of mine who is not part of the wildfact community but was kind enough to share this video with me

Amazing interaction indeed! A Jaguarland member just shared it a few hours ago so what a coincidence.

Indeed, that's a sub-adult female, hence the delicate look.

@Balam Hello, is the average weight of the jaguars in the Araguaian River (Amazonian/Cerrado) the same as the one u sent previously? (83,6 kg)

Hi friend, the jaguars from the Araguaia River are very fascinating and are currently being reserached by the Instituto Onça Pintada (IOP) since the river is one of the most important natural corridors for jaguars in the country.

To date, we don't possess any public data on the weights of jaguars from the Araguaia-Tocantins basin. IOP may have performed captures, but if they have, no data has been released on it.

What I can tell you is that the jaguars from the Araguaia-Tocantins basin will almost certainly surpass in size those from Mamiraua which harbors some of the smallest jaguars in the world as jaguars in that area and aren't forced into the tree canopy for a month on end to rely on tiny arboreal prey during the monsoon season like the ones from Mamiraua are.

Recently we showed this case of a massive river dolphin killed by a female jaguar in the Araguaia River. Capybara, peccary, caiman, deer, and tapir are also common, as well as occasionally cattle. That, combined with the gene flow that they get of jaguars from the Cerrado almost guarantees better morphological fitness compared to other areas of the inner Amazon. Whether their weights on average would be around 84 kg would depend on multiple factors, but I do think that kind of body mass would be reasonable as a median for an adult male from that area.

The Xingu River which covers the northern part of the Arguaia-Tocantins basin is known for producing huge jaguars, as an example, see this melanistic male from the area. Xingu is also the area where sisters Mariua and Juruna from the Iberá Project were sourced from, and they have grown to become stout Amazonian females with a bull-dog-like build:
