There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Next question...
What was bred together to domesticate them?

They are to wild water-buffaloes what dog breeds are to wolves.

The Northeast Indian & IndoChinese species Bubalas Arnee Carabanensis (swamp) & Central Indian wild water-buffalo Bubalas Arnee Bubalis (river) were the source populations.

  • From Wiki: The origins of the domestic water buffalo types are debated, although results of a phylogenetic study indicate that the swamp type may have originated in China and was domesticated about 4,000 years ago, while the river type may have originated from India and was domesticated about 5,000 years ago
Beyond that selective breeding took over, i guess.

The "Toda" breed being semi-domesticated, retains much fascinating genes!!!
The females live in small herds in forests along villages. They approach people who feed them hay & husk.. that's when milking takes place. They look more domesticated...
The males however, are completely wild & only comes to proximity ov human settlements to mate. They retain their wild look...
