Gujarat government propose the development of a tiger corridor connecting the forest areas of Lunawada and Dahod.

Principal chief conservator of forests A K Saxena said that the plan, which will cost Rs 5 crore to implement, has been sent to the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

Gujarat’s forest department wants to make the habitat conducive to tiger survival. The plan covers a series of initiatives, such as boosting the prey base and creating watering holes.

“The department expects the facilities to be in place in three years,” Saxena said. He said that the department will set up camera traps in Lunawada and Dahod.

A senior officer of the Gujarat forest department said that the tiger population was increasing in the country and some tigers may venture into Gujarat. The Ratapani corridor which runs between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh is likely to register tiger movement.

On February 12, Gujarat forest department officials had photographed a tiger walking around in a jungle area in Mahisagar, a district in northeast Gujarat that borders Rajasthan. It is not far from the Madhya Pradesh border.

The officer said that the forest department had recorded traces of a tiger since monsoon last year. But the signs were not taken seriously. The pictures taken by the teacher spurred media attention and greater vigilance was exercised.

The officer said that if the National Tiger Conservation Authority refused to release funds, the department would approach the state government for money. The officer said that the proposal sent to the authority stresses the improvement in the herbivore population.

Under the initiative, breeding programme in the area will be monitored and special water points introduced. The department also plans to educate the people of Lunawada and Dahod about tigers.
