Lion update!
On Friday night, the three Mjejane Males came onto the reserve to sort out the 6 young interlopers who have been laying claim over the past week, roaring precociously across at Kruger from the river bank.
One of the younger males managed to get himself isolated between Old Fence and Leadwood. His mates had hidden away towards the south east.
Foolishly, he contact-called (inexperience?)and the three boys found him.
A huge fracas ensued as they chased him down to the dam, attacking and injuring him badly (in the bushes).
An elephant herd then stampeded the lions and the fight moved out of the bushes to the northern bank of the dam where all could see what ensued.
The youngster was badly bashed, but still able to stand. The big three just kept coming back at him to administer more blows in quick, angry bursts.
The fourth attack dealt the killer bite as the youngest of our Big Three broke the lion’s back. It was ferocious.
They then came back for one last look, realised they’d done the job, and sauntered off.
The young chap took about an hour or so to finally die - so didn’t suffer too long.
The Big Three were last seen by Tim on Cheetah and no sign of them this morning. They seem to have headed back to Kruger. Perhaps they think their work is done?
Under the radar, the now five youngsters are still in the south east. They made a kill on Rock Fig and have been joined by that lioness who has been roaming the reserve. She seems to be in probably fake oestris as two of the boys are very interested in her and we saw one mating moment.
