There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

not sure why people keep saying today's population came from 12 already inbred captive animals maybe some did but most were def from a number of healthy wild ones still roaming

Because these are when by journalists who don't actually know anything about them beyond quick googling. It ranges from "12 lions left" & "only a few dozen lions" to "less than 50".

Originally based on several sources of the time that simultaneously stated 12, 20, 50, 100. The "dozen left at Gir" (total number was sporadically spread over much of today's Greater Gir back then) is from Nawab of Junagad. Said nawab also invited the then Viceroy Lord Curzon to shoot them, who refused & instructed him to protect them. Whole credit goes to him, not the nawab who did what royalty always did, ie, nothing constructive.
There is absolutely no reason to believe anything source from these people & I can guarantee his number wasn't based on any actual field work. He probably just found them harder to find during his hunts.

Detailed post on how much their numbers dropped
