Having heard their roars in the West at the beginning of drive, WE searched for tracks only to find they were still on the open area by the dam! By the time WE caught up with them they were just disappearing into the bush. The Alpha male of the Matimba lions.The big "Nduna" or chief of the group has the tip of his tail missing. "Matimba male lions (6) Rhino shortcut road (The morning started out with the six male lions tracks coming south straight towards the KNP pride (4ways pride) that was on a zebra kill. As we then followed there tracks moving east away from the kill as the males tracks was on top of the female tracks. This could only mean one thing... the cubs were in danger. But we could only find one set of cub tracks and that was not a good sign. We followed on to see if we could locate them. After about a half hour we got one of the males coming north. Then all of a sudden we got another five males behind, this was awesome to see. We followed them in to the bush where they brought down a buffalo calf. It was Mayhem when all six of them started to fight over the calf. But finally they all settled down but still growling at each other. Wow what a morning. No news on the KNP pride." That male was followed by his 5 other brothers! These are the new boys on the block" No info if the males caught up with the females and no info on the cubs. Only time will tell.. By Peter Rettig: Thanks, let's hope the KNP girls have listened to the roaring and made their way out of danger in time, did you heard Majingilanes roaring back as answer to Matimba males ? By Cedric Dold: We only got sets for one one cub.. not good news From: Karin van der Merwe 28th july 2011 "They came all the way from the Manyeleti ... far north of us. They started moving to the south the last few days and were seen on Vuyatela yesterday. Last night they moved further south onto Chitwa where they found the KNP pride on the Zebra kill. There was some sort of a fight...not really sure what happened but we think they might have been chasing the KNP females south during the night or very early this morning. Our rangers followed up on the tracks and found them close to the Mala Mala boundry... Luck was on our side as there was a herd of Buffalo and apparently one of them took down a young one and eventually the other 5 joined later on. May be the Matimbas decide the south being to costly to invade? Let's hope for it. (Cedric Dold) The Majingilanes is older.. about a year. But the Matimba males are big in body. We're looking forward to seeing some little Matimbas around!
