The scars of the lions evidence of bloody conflicts - of rival fights among neighbors of the dispute over the spoils and also something quite different - rather opposites: of passion.

Just as Scarface calmly resting in tall grass here, with scratches on the nose, a swollen eye, still showing quite clearly that the scar dermal tissue will never heal completely. This is a common sight of lions in the Maasai Mara. For example during mating season there is always the risk to get at least a few new scars from females while mating.The females are not just devoted and affectionate during lovemaking. It is just the opposite. Once the act is done, quickly enough, they don’t like to be disturbed for a while. A sharp claw or quick bite and happiness is gone, that the big cats can have up to fifteen times in a short time. No wonder that their faces are decorated with such scars.

In July 2011, the wound was fresh. 2014 it seemed to be healed, but now for the last months, it enlarged further. Veterinarians tried to treat the wound several times in the past - but no success. Currently they cannot do anything, because the lion was stunned very often and more treatments would be critical for Scarface health at the moment. Reply
