There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Wild carnivores and humans compared

As many of you surely know, something that I am very passionate about is achieving good portraits of wild animals. But of all the ones I have achieved, this is the one that has marked me the most so far.

It is a huge male cougar.

We were driving through Torres del Paine National Park and unexpectedly a cougar appeared on the side of the road.
We started to take some photos and then we saw that about 100 meters between the bushes there was another giant puma eating a guanaco.

From one second to the next, my adrenaline invaded and I was no longer happy, so I stayed in silence analyzing this male as he fed. Very calm he would stop and turn his back to me while I ate, then he would lie down and lick his paws, then, realizing that the cougar did not feel like a threat, I got closer very little by little.

After an hour or so I realized that I had come a long way and was very close to the cougar, in fact I was closer to him than to the car and I must admit that I got a little nervous. It was about 20 meters away and the size of its legs was perfect, its great strength was demonstrated by the ease with which it moved the guanaco while destroying it, the sound of the bones and the meat began to transform the situation into something more and more uncertain, but at the same time the photo I had always dreamed of was finally within my grasp.

In a minute I crossed the limit and I think I was irresponsible because I got closer than I should. It was a very big cougar and if it had wanted it perfectly it could have attacked me too.

This look was the last photo I took of him. He was about 7 meters away, as shown in the 2nd photo taken by @japo_silva when he unexpectedly got up and stared at me as if to say; Dare to take another step ... It was amazing how helpless I felt at that moment. I froze and he wasn't even breathing ... But I think I handled the situation well and slowly I walked away and he continued to enjoy his grip.
