Pandit Is Dead, Long Live Pandit
About a month back, Parag Madhukar Dakate(Director of Corbett National Park) activated shoot at sight orders for the poachers, after receiving intelligence about poaching activities in the area. He had put everybody on high alert and even the villagers were told not to enter the park premises.
While all the wildlife lovers were celebrating this development, Mr Dakate was transferred and the shoot at sight orders were cancelled by higher authorities, ensuring that this move will not only shield the poachers but endanger the very animal they are meant to protect.
And as soon as orders were cancelled, Poacher sightings were reported by tourists in different areas of Corbett - Jhirna Jhali, Gairal, Dhela and Jhirna. The tourists reported that these shabbily dressed men were armed and ran away on seeing the tourist vehicle. But the Department not only chose to ignore this vital information but tried convincing tourists that those must have been Department people( why would Department people run on seeing tourists is best known to them).
Within three four days of the suspected poachers sightings, a tiger was found dead near Dhangadi gate of Dhikala Zone. The body was spotted by tourists, who did manage to get a picture of the dead tiger. When the Department people reached there,they not only asked the tourists to leave but also covered the body. The tourists thought that it was Pandit, the famous tiger, all of 4 years. The Department, however, released a statement claiming that the dead Tiger was a 10years old male, who died of starvation as he could not hunt cause of a quill injury in his leg.
Whereas certain things raise doubts about what the Department is claiming. The markings in the picture of the dead tiger, match the markings of Pandit, see images below.
Pandit was the son of a very popular tigress called Sharmeeli in Bijrani Zone and had recently shifted and made the area around Dhangadi gate Dhikala Zone his territory. The body was extremely swollen, which raises doubts of poisoning or some other cause As death from starvation was impossible as Pandit was spotted just two days before this incident and was absolutely healthy. Then there were stories of finding porcupine quill, which couldn't be verified either.
The Department not only covered up the truth about this young and beautiful tiger, they also misled about the age of the tiger. If a department cannot differentiate between a 4year old and a 10, we can imagine how knowledgable they are. This lying about Pandits death could mean that the Department is trying to cover up more than what is obvious. Is Corruption the new order of the day for Forest Department running Jim Corbett National Park. This attitude of ignorance and manipulation will only lead to endangering other Tiger lives.
Pandit was popular and people looked forward to spotting him and his body was found by tourists that is why this case came to light otherwise Forest Department had it all covered, what about other Tigers, how safe are they or the Department will look the other way one another precious life is lost.
And now another tigress was found dead in ramnagar forest range and again the department claims hunger to be the reason... 7th death of a tiger in last three and a half months. Are we waiting for all the tigers to vanish before taking a stand.

With the marking on image no. 3 and 4, it can be deduced that the dead tiger was indeed Pandit.
