There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Numbers didn't plummet that much for genetic quality to degrade.

When conservation started India had about 1500 tigers, thinly spread over a much larger area of wilderness than today. http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/280/1762/20130496

But, most forests we spotted with villages & the tiger density was much lower even in today's tiger reserves!
20 tigers in a single forest was a pretty high number back then... It still is in the reserves where indigenous tribal people live today!

With creation of Tiger Reserves the tigers (or their progeny) quickly moved to those inviolate pockets & that brought together a wide variety of genes.
(It may be one of the reasons for rise in average size of Indian tigers in the last half century. My personal view. I doubt it can be proved...)

Central India & Terai, which saw most of those huntings, still has fairly well connectivity.
