Nah, that's a fang wound.

The other thing I can think would made such a wound would be the  horn of a buffalo, but surviving THAT would be a feat.

“In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight...”

The legendary lion, Bob, of the coalition Bob & Ziggy who spent part of his life in the “Namiri Plains” died a few days ago. This is terrible and heart-breaking news. This lion (assumed 15 years of age) was not only famous among our guides and guests but was legendary.

We will all truly miss him.

He's the one formerly known as C-Boy. The photographer said in another comment that his brother was seen yesterday, but it seems they've lost their territory.

Thanks for the earlier reply Tshokwane. Fifteen is a ripe old age for a male lion, but sad nonetheless.

The patented "Crater Mane"

Like my guide told me, in the Crater because of the cooler temps and lush greenery the Males Mane is much fuller and will quite often cover the entire shoulder which isn't usually the case outside of the Crater.

@Pckts :

About #100: This would be a moving frontier of the territory !

Apart from that, beautiful male lion.

Credits to Kope Lion.

A delayed field update; in July 2018 we received a report of a big male lion on the NCA plains near the border of Serengeti National Park. To our surprise it was the now 8 years old Ngorongoro Crater-born lion MG106, aka “Hjalmar the Dreadful” (his mane often full of muddy dreads).

The last time we saw him was many moons ago in the Crater, after he and his companion "Kijana" got ousted from the Lagunita pride by other males. Great news that Hjalmar had managed this risky trek 60 kilometres away from his home-place in the Crater, across the vast plains of the multiuse Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Impressive males like him make an attractive target for the traditional warriors.

Finding Hjalmas here, relaxed and in great shape, supports the possibility for lions continued coexistence. We have not seen or heard of Hjalmar since, and we presume and hope that he is safe and well inside the Serengeti.
