I don't think Lionesses are scared of him anymore in his condition. Further more, he has no stakes in the survival of the cubs, only in keeping good relationships with the Ximhungwes aswell as those are also a potential pride he can get food from. 
Its already rare for healthy male lions to intervene in pride conflicts. So most likely he would have just fled.

I think he is also a bit to far gone to join a coalition right now. 
In this condition I doubt any potential partner would find any reason to keep him around. So for now its best for him to keep his head low and hope this drop in condition too will pass like it has before. Reply
